Winter In Eden – Court Of Conscience – Firestreak Media
By Jeffrey Easton
So here we go with another major symphonic/power metal release but it’s a rarity because the massive vocals up front are provided by the enigmatic Vicky Johnson. You can count on just so many fingers how many bands of this ilk are fronted by a female, the most famous of course is Nightwish and then it tails into obscurity. Winter In Eden do escape some of the normal power metal trappings by employing electronics amongst the heavy riffs and Vicky’s vocals are so penetrating you get lost in every track. Their sound sears somewhere between the lofty Nightwish and the guts and bones attack of Lullacry, both bands having amazing females at their helm. Following in the steep path of their two EP’s and two full lengths, they mix a stunning array of symphonic pieces to beautiful piano runs and disturbing electronics, never leaving the listener craving for something different. The Script is a mellower piece featuring Vicky’s more emotive vocals whereas Toxicate is an evil brew of Samuel’s guitars and Steve’s sinister keyboards against brooding vocals. This was my introduction to Winter In Eden and I will hunt down their older material, I am hooked.
