UFO – The Salentino Cuts – Cleopatra
By Jeffrey Easton
When you are a legendary band like UFO with some of rocks biggest albums in its lore you have a reputation to protect and uphold. Well, like some heavyweight bands of the past that need that extra dollar, you resort to this. Covers albums are seemingly needed now by these bands, or they think we need them, which is why we see so many of them in the past decade. Why? Why take perfectly good songs in their own right and muck them up with how you think they should sound? The most blasphemous of cuts here is their painful rendition of River Of Deceit by Mad Season. What made that song work is Layne’s mournful vocals and the eeriness surrounding the tone. Not this overblown bafoonary that takes away any dignity that could have been given to such a meaningful song. The rest of the album reads like a Tuesday night at a covers bar: Break On Through, Rock Candy, Just Got Paid, Mississippi Queen, and of course The Pusher. I do not like covers, I do not like covers cds and I detest a legendary band pissing on what was once an amazing legacy. Sorry kids, we are a looooong way from Doctor Doctor and Too Hot To Handle.
