Rock Resurrection Tour
Theory Of A Deadman/Skillet/Saint Asonia – Hard Rock Live – Wheatland, Ca, 3/23
By Jeffrey Easton
Assigning a title like Rock Resurrection Tour to this outing was fitting, since the world has opened back up, fans are wanting live shows, they want their favorite bands to command the stages again and tonight they got more than what they bargained for. All three bands bring a huge history and a massive catalog of albums to one stage and the sold out venue was anticipating every note.
Saint Asonia opened the night and considering the bands and Adam Gontiers’ history, the venue filled up quickly for an opening band. Getting the night off right was their first single from their S/T debut album, Better Place. With those first notes the venue erupted, the night was on. They canvased their two LPs and Eps and built a massive set that included Above It All, The Hunted And Devastate that’s helped cultivate that loud following. Adam kept the crowd in the palm of his hand while the band drove the car. Aside from Saint, Adam was the singer for Three Days Grace and contributed vocals to Apocalypticas’ break out hit I Don’t Care, which they performed live to my and everybody else’s freaked delight. Digging further back into his career he brought back I Hate Everything About You to which Saint Asonia made it their own. Closing out their set was the aptly titled Let Me Live, to me, a perfect calling card for the last few years and the band did not go quietly. Saint Asonia are still a rising band and their mark will be made.
What can I say about Skillit in the live arena that hasn’t already been said? They are one of the best live bands, hands down. I’ve witnessed them live several times and they never fail to bring a show you will never forget. Skillet have been mainstays of the hard rock scene for over two decades, bringing out
album after album of pure testimony of their faith. Still out in support of their critically and commercially successful album Dominion, they dropped in on concert starved Sacramento to give their side of the story. Wasting no time they lit the stage up with Feel Invincible from their massive 2016 album Unleashed. Just as crazy as the fully packed Hardrock Live was getting with Skillit revving it up I don’t know if they were a match for the band. I know bands want to deliver for their fans but Skillit LIVE to give their fans their moneys worth. There are few guitar players as into what they are doing as Korey Cooper and Seth Morrison, period. The stage is their battlefield and they are at war for their setlist. Speaking of their setlist, it was packed with their testimonials and the new album was well represented with Surviving The Game, Finish Line and Psycho In My Head, three massive singles that stand as a testament that even though they are years deep into their career, they can still bring fresh, heavy material the fans want to hear and sing back to the band. There is a reason they still sell records and bring in thousands every night. Diving deeper into the setlist, we find them visiting the now decade old Rise with Finish Line and the title track Rise. Also it saw the debut of guitar player of debut Seth Morrison who has been a massive force in the band since. If you have yet to see Skillit live, how have you not? They are the consummate live band and not to be missed.
Theory Of A Deadman are true survivors, having lived past the post grunge years, nu metal, every phase, to come out winners. Over 20 years and now dropping their 8th album Dinosaur, they are primed to continue their run as one of the biggest rock bands on vinyl and stage. As said, Dinosaur just dropped and is already making waves, multiple singles in the charts, the album selling well and more tours in the works. The band hit the stage to a loud roar from the manic crowd eagerly awaiting them and the strains of the title track to their new album blasted through the speakers and the TOADM part of the night was on. I love Dinosaur, it speaks to me as a great stab at the world around us as dumb as it is, we are seriously on a fast track downward. Staying with the new album. The focus was on Two Of Us, a dark take on Bill Withers Just the Two Of Us and possibly the best track in their canon. If you have had an ass in your life, the words will speak to you and the fans did sing this back to the band. AS stated, the band has a big catalog, thy have been all over radio for years so if there is something in their set list, the crowd will probably be louder than the band and that was the case tonight as Bitch Came Back bellowed through the speakers, History Of Violence and Bad Girlfriend but what blew me away was their cover of Chris Issaks’ Wicked Game.. Tyler Connollys’ spooky delivery did the track justice as they made it their own. They came back to the new record with the anthemic Ambulance which I feel is on its way to hockey stadiums. Dinosaur is a massive album and it really comes to life in the live setting, I think it will go down as one of their best albums.
Did you miss live music due to issues of the past few years? Rock tours are indeed resurrected and you need to get your tickets, buy the shirts, buy the albums and support the bands. What are you waiting for?
