The NAMM Show 2020 – Anaheim, CA – January 16-19
by John Knowles & Jeffrey Easton
Truly one of the annual highlights for the music industry is the Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA. Just weeks ago, the music product industry at large along with artists, media, and fans, converged on to the Anaheim Convention Center in Orange County, California to set the stage for growth within the music marketplace for the year 2020. Once again Metal Exiles was there to bring our readers the exclusive scoop on all products and appearances that fans and performers of heavy music need to know.
To kick off our review of the winter NAMM Show 2020, let’s hear it from Bill Wenzloff of Morely, a company that should be no stranger to fans of hard rock/heavy metal:
"[The NAMM Show] is the single most important place to promote, learn, investigate, mingle, collaborate, network, plan and claim your stake in this wonderful business of music." Such a true sentiment as one looks around the many show floors and corners of the Anaheim Convention center on any given day of the winter NAMM Show.
According to the official post-Show press release, “[The 115,000] Registrants were an invited mix of industry professionals from across the [musical] crossroads and included domestic and international retail and distribution buyers and employees, exhibitors, entertainment tech and pro audio buyers and professionals, media, artists, invited guests, and The NAMM Foundation GenNext (college music students and faculty), Music Education Days (school music administrators and buyers) and Nonprofit Institute (NAMM grantees and nonprofit affiliates) participants.” This is a remarkably diverse mix of attendees, and a true sign of a thriving market.
These numbers speak highly of the relevance that the music products industry still holds throughout the world. President and CEO of NAMM, Joe Lamond had this to say, “It was incredible to see NAMM Members and industry professionals from around the world come together in such a positive way to experience the launch of countless new products, attend the best industry education available anywhere and to enjoy the comradery and networking that makes our musical lives so meaningful.” This is a positive sign for any global market.
Held January 16-19, over the course of four days the NAMM Show welcomed over 2,000 exhibitors, representing 7,000 brands. It again looks like the Show coordinators took a closer look at badge allocations allowing for a truer business experience for buyers. Not only that, but the NAMM Show was proud to showcase a significant increase in international participants, which is further proof of the global impact this business has.
This year, as in years past, hard rock and heavy metal was well represented at the NAMM Show. Making appearances and performing demonstrations were Paul Gilbert, Steve Morse, YouTube star Jared Dines, as well as current and former members of Dream Theater, Nevermore, Vio-Lence, Anthrax, Testament, I Killed The Prom Queen, Machine Head, Blue Oyster Cult, Blue Murder, King Kobra, Ozzy Osbournes' bands, Issues, Alice Cooper band, and Dio, among many others.

Strandberg Guitars
As metal evolves so do the guitars. When visiting the NAMM show it is easy to get lost in the endless variety of guitars that bear a close enough resemblance as to be lost in the mix. The scene can feel a bit myopic until you run into something like Strandberg.
Played by the likes of Haken, Per Nilsson of Scar Symmetry/Meshuggah, and Paul Masvidal of Cynic, Strandberg guitars offer an unparalleled feel and playability. These guitars offer many unique features including their patented EndurNeck™ profile and multi-scale neck that is longer for the heavier strings and shorter for the thinner strings. The wood choice and proprietary hardware are additional features that add to the unrivaled playability of these guitars. Standberg has introduced a few new models to their roster at this year’s NAMM Show.
The Boden Neck-Thru is the next evolution of the original Boden design that was only available in the past as a custom Made to Measure instrument. This new Neck-Thru variety is the production design, and may now be enjoyed by many more guitarists than ever before. With the Neck-Thru design access to the upper frets is even easier than before, and the rich sound will strike you as something typically uncharacteristic of neck-thrus.
Also new for the Boden design is the TT models in 6, 7, and 8-string varieties. The revolutionary True Temperament™ fretting system offers unprecedented accuracy and intonation. It’s great to see this feature on another production model from these guys.
Per Nilsson is a long-time Strandberg user, and the company has produced a new signature model called the Boden ‘Singularity’ 2020. Available in both 7-string and 8-string varieties, this guitar comes in either a stunning Red/Black or Blue/Black Blast natural finish, True Temperament™ fretting system, color coordinated hardware, Slim EndurNeck™ neck profile, and custom Lundgren pickups. Check out all that Strandberg has to offer at https://strandbergguitars.com/
Ibanez PIA
Steve Vai is one of the most endeared and renowned guitarists of all time. His contributions to heavy music cannot be overstated and his signature Ibanez JEMs are some of the most popular artist series guitars of all time. The Ibanez JEMs have been around for 35 years, and have seen numerous models through the 3 decades of their existence. Although Ibanez has no plans to discontinue the JEMs, it was time to develop the next step in its evolution with the announcement of the Steve Vai Signature PIA.
While the JEMs were consistently beautiful, the original floral fretboard inlays could sometimes clash with the harsher “Monkey Grip” and sharp body design. The extensive design and feel of this new instrument was done in close partnership with Vai himself, and features a "Petal Grip" of flower petal–shaped holes, which beautifully match a newly designed colorful floral inlay. This floral ornamentation also extends to the pickup covers and pickguard. The PIA body also features a softer design with a beveled edge where your forearm rests. The PIA model also features a volume knob with a push-pull pot that activates a low-cut filter. Retailing at $3,500, this guitar is a hefty investment, but one of the more ornate and exquisite guitars featured at this year’s NAMM Show. To learn more visit https://www.ibanez.com/
Framus D-Series Stormbender
Framus has introduced the latest artist signature to their D-Series lineup with the Devin Townsend Stormbender. This guitar is available in a solid black high polish finish and a set maple neck with a 22-fret ebony fingerboard. Dunlop
This year, the Dunlop booth was far more streamlined, while taking up a similar showroom footprint. While this might seem like a loss, they provided a much more accommodating visitor experience. On one side of their booth, they had display cases lined up about 25’ long with plenty of helpful exhibitors there to answer any and all questions. They were generous in their giveaways too, allowing us to walk away with a sampling of their new guitar picks.
New for this year is the Jazz III pick in Gator Grip®. These picks feature all of the qualities the Jazz III is known for but with a thicker matte surface. You’ll notice unique tonal qualities compared to the Nylon or Stiffo varieties.
Their artist series continues to expand with another signature pick from Dream Theater’s John Petrucci. The John Petrucci Trinity features a custom Small Tri shape with the contoured edges of the Flow® Pick shape with a Jazz III-inspired tip. John’s idea was that he wanted a pick that had useful tips on all corners, and the Trinity delivers! See Dunlop’s amazing pick lineup by visiting https://www.jimdunlop.com/

The New BOSS SY-1000 is a guitar synthesizer like no other. It uses a new software engine called ‘Subtractive Synthesis,’ which allows for a more accurate and nuanced response from the synth. Historically, guitar synths have been plagued with issues due to a player’s expression or speed. This new synth does a fantastic job, especially when paired with the Roland GK-pickup, of capturing all the finer details of one’s playing for truer tone modulation. This product features a 32-bit processor, ability to add expression pedals, guitar modeling, and the added capability to layer up to 3 synth sounds.

Lord of the Cards – The Punniest Geekiest Music Theory Card Game
One of the most unique product offerings we have ever seen at NAMM comes in the way of a card game! This is not your average card game, this is a music theory teaching tool. The object of the game is fairly straight forward – but be warned, you need to know your stuff when it comes to music theory to have the best competitive edge. Key signature cards determine the key of the round. Each player then selects a set of cards that each feature a particular note. Tokens are distributed that you may add to a note card that will pitch the note to a sharp or flat. Each player then takes their turn attempting to build chords within the round’s key signature. A player who builds chords for 3 separate key signatures wins the game! Doesn’t this sound like amazing fun? Visit http://lordofthechords.com/ to order yours now!
Strüng
On the main floor of the Show we once again dropped by Strüng – The Guitar String Jewelry Company. Strüng features a unique line of necklaces and bracelets inspired by different Rock tunes. The company offers great designs for both men and women. Their beaded bracelet line includes styles such as “The Anthem” inspired by Green Day’s “21 Guns,” and “The Immortal” inspired by Metallica’s “Fade to Black.” This year, the company has introduced 4 new bracelet styles with beautiful new bead designs. Design features on these new styles are inspired by the likes of “Black Hole Sun” and “Run to the Hills.” These bracelets are made with authentic guitar string ball ends, a unique centerpiece, and Preciosa beads. Orders also come with a faux leather pouch and applicable song card. Celebrate your love for music in style and visit http://www.getstrung.com/
With so many great product innovations it is almost a shame the Show only lasts but 4 days a year. The music products industry is alive and well and will continue to thrive provided designers and developers continue to push the envelope and fold in the latest in technological and musical trends. The NAMM Show is the only place to see all of these great products in one place, and with an endless variety of demos, artist appearances, and unmatched atmosphere there is nothing like the winter NAMM Show.
NAMM will return to Southern California in 2021 on January 21-24.

BOSS SY-1000 Guitar Synthesizer

The EVO 4 features a simple 2in/2out interface, 113dB dynamic range, mic preamps with 58dB gain range, and their patented Smartgain, which automatically sets the appropriate gain when the user begins speaking, singing, or performing.
