Idobi Radio Presents Summer School - Grove Of Anaheim, Anaheim, Ca 8/24
By Jeffrey Easton
This is the kind of tour I have been waiting on for awhile. The feeling of Warped has returned with Summer School, a new tour pushing up and coming bands stamping their name on the scene. This tour was founded by non-other than Mr Warped himself Kevin Lyman, Eric Tobin from Hopeless Records and Michael Kaminsky from KMGMT. When you have that kind of music power, a haul of great sponsors like Hot Topic, Save The Music, Epitaph and Hopeless to name a few, This has the makings of something huge. I covered 14 Warped Tours so to see a tour in that realm again was not to be missed.
This was a tour of independent artists trying to make it to the headliner status and kicking it off was Noelle Sucks, a local So. Cal artist who I feel is primed for the stage. She has the songs, the presence and an amazing voice. Bringing life during her set to Like I Died, Ugly Ugly and Crumbs amongst her output, she brought many people into her fold as the Grove was already packing out as she owned the stage while it was hers. Watch this massive talent as she rises in the scene, it won't be long.
Letdown. were next up and Blake Coddington, singer and song writer, absolutely blitzed the stage. Blake is a self-made artist, pushing himself across multiple platforms, garnering as much attention to his brilliant tracks as he can. If you have ever felt letdown in anyway, you can empathize whith him and bring yourself back up this his massive riffs. The fans in attendance were on his side from the first note as the band killed his set featuring Crying In The Shower, Hate Myself, Love Is A Weapon and Karma. His music is modern, heavy, melodic and will not leave your head once it is tapped in. Again, a future headliner that I’m surprised isn’t already there.
Honey Revenge was next to destroy the stage and that they did. They have been around for a few years and with several videos cut and having shared a few tours, they are poised for the big stage. Coming out to massive screams from a loud audience, they banged right into Recipe For Disaster and the first thing I caught onto, besides the crocs that were being worn, was the guitarist’s skills. Donovan Lloyd has riffs for days and fueled the set with the deft fretwork he possesses. AS they sailed through their set that included Distracted, Rerun(they have a great video for this) and Airhead, it was obvious they were influenced by the Warped generation and now it's their duty to carry that on.
The Home Team came with their built-in fan base as the Grove erupted when they came out. This is a tour for getting bands over that last hump but I feel they only need that last push and they are there. They just dropped The Crucible of Life in July so this tour has pushed that album for them and the set was heavy with the record. Loud, Brag, Love & Co, Roomates was all met with what I was expecting, ecstasy to no end. The second track in the set, Right Through Me, I couldn’t hear the band anymore where I was at the crowd was so loud and singing every word louder than they were. Where do I put them? Def influenced by Warped, newer Emarosa comes to mind but they have a sound that they have honed into their own and if the music gods have their way, these guys will be major headliners.
Magnolia Park were next and I will be blunt, their set did not impress. They did not have stage presence, some of their tracks were canned for the live show and I feel as if they came to get paid and that’s it. The songs are good, but that’s it, good, everything sounded the same. If you want to be seen, heard, you need to come to the stage ready to go, with some diversity in your set and it wasn’t here for me.
Scene Queen, absolutely not. This act was an assault on my senses and not in a good way. The set was littered with tracks of I guess self-empowerment but when you get down to it, some of it was 3rd rate porno inspired. I’ve shot GWAR many times and they brought more depth to the stage than this. If this is who you are, more power to you.
The night ended on a high note with Stand Atlantic bringing down The Grove in loud and brash fashion. Out on the road getting the fans amped up for their new album Was Here. Was Here isan eclectic record mixing stinging guitars, huge bass lines and electronics to rip your speakers to shreds. That album came alive tonight with the stand out tracks Girl$, aggressive set opener Warzone, the absolutely uplifting Love U Anyway and Criminal. Signed to Hopeless, they are on a path to stardom, having that Warped feel mixed with Lolapalooza vibe, this band brings generations of influences to bear with Bonnie Fraser going off on the mic. They closed the show for a reason, they have that stage presence and bring the goods to the stage. They will be dropping records for years to come.
Along with bringing some new and up an coming bands.this tour also raised 15,000 for Save The Music Foundation, a very worthy cause. They could use your donation today as the fight for getting instruments in the hands of all kids is vital for the next generation of Summer School students. As stated, I appreciate packages like this. The bands are giving, between sets the bands were at their merch tables, singing stuff and taking pics. I saw little kids crowd surfing, just a great vibe for the fans all night. I used to see this kind of openness on Warped, lets do it again While Summer School is in session.
