Unearth/Upon A Burning Body/156/Silence – Goldfield – Roseville, CA 5/23
By Jeffrey Easton
In The Early 2000’s, the face of metal changed in America with the New Wave of American Heavy Metal crashing over the country. So many bands were rising up and taking charge: Lamb Of God, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage and our band of the hour, Unearth. Unearth were making noise until they dropped the bomb that was The Oncoming Storm and they have been relentless since then. With countless tours and monstrous albums under their belts, they have remained on the forefront of that wave and with the release of their 8th album The Wretched; The Ruinous, they show no signs of slowing down.
156/Silence opened the night and to say they were lethal would be an understatement. Out on tour for 2022s’ Narrative, vocalist Jack Murray and company brought enough venom to the stage to kill the audience. This wasn’t your average metal core, this was along the frail edges of avant garde mixing with psychotic euphoria. Pile driving through the new record, they pulled out The Rodents Race as well as If Pleasures Gone as well as Conflict of Interest and Irrational Pull from the album of the same name. Describing them is one thing, seeing them is another, words to not do this band justice, you have to be on the barricade taking it in to fill in the blanks.
Upon A Burning Body continuing to tour, make new albums and bring people into the pit tells me that the new wave is still crashing well. This Texas bred metal band is brutal, melodic and engaging with songs that you will remember, the hallmark of what keeps a band circle pit deep in fans. Danny Leal announced that we were all in Texas as the pounding sounds of Texas Blood Money started to ring out and it was on. Still out on the road supporting Fury, they are still bringing the southern hostility to the stage. Fury is still getting love on the stage as they pummeled out A New Responsibility and Shapeshifter as the pit destroyed the floor. Danny is a great frontman, he keeps the fans engaged with the whats going on with the mayhem that is the stage. With their chaotic set at a close, what the fans had been waiting for, was finally here.
As stated, Unearth was on the ground floor of the Early 2000s metal movement and they are still proudly waving that flag. Having just dropped The Wretched; The Ruinous, it was time to take their high octane show back on the road. Its been awhile since they dropped their last lethal effort so the fans have been frothing for a new album and this does not disappoint. This is 11 tracks of pure venom, nothing held back. As the lights dropped and Unearth hit the stage to My Will Be Done, the crowd lost it and the floor blew up. The Goldfield could barely contain the pit that was building. This Lying World and The Sanctity Of Brothers was only building up the swell for the new material and the band dropped the title track and it sounded even better turned up louder in the live setting. This band only gets better with age and I can say that as I have had the privilege of seeing them live since 2004. They have changed a few members but the heart is still there and it was pounding furiously as the band tore through their massive catalog. My introduction to the band was The Oncoming Storm, I saw them a few times on that tour and to still be able to hear Zombie Autopiltot and The Great Dividers live and it still sound as fresh as it did nearly 20 years ago is a testament to how solid the band is today. If you haven’t seen Unearth yet or its been awhile, you are missing out, the band still has the fire and Trevor Phipps still commands the stage as if it was his pulpit.
