WARPED Tour 2013 – Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, CA 6/13
By Jeffrey Easton
WARPED Tour is always an event and 2013 was no exception. The diversity of the bands was unbelievable and the turnout was capacity, a true sign of a healthy tour. The tour hit Mountain View, CA and the kids were out early and in hordes to see what was possibly the best line up to date. The day started just as soon as I was in the gates as Hawthorne Heights gave off the first riffs of the day as they cranked it front of an already massive crowd. They are out this year for their new release Zero, which is an amazing piece of work, so they had so much to give to the fans and they ate up every second of the set. Metal Exiles was out for the heavier bands and we were not disappointed because this line up was sick with it and Blessthefall lived up to what I was wanting. Their new album, Hallow Bodies is a dark affair and it came across nastily on stage. Beau Bokan is a sick front man and had the fans in his grip from the first note. On the other end of the dark spectrum I got the Black Veil Brides, the phenoms from Los Angeles that have basically taken over the world of metal and they are only three records in. They have the most loyal fan base, these kids get there at the opening, camp out at their stage and don’t move until they hit the last note, that’s love. Their set was riddled with tracks from their conceptual record Wretched And Devine and as good as it is, it sounded better live. Attila, holy shit, these guys are monsters. Combining the heaviest elements of metal, punk and rap, they fuse that into what is in the form of their new record About That life and here they are on the WARPED Stage killing it for the fans. August Burns Red was, to me, angry as fuck, period. Rescue And Restore was about to drop and they were giving it to the fans in heavy doses and to me, it’s their best effort. There is no explaining the madness of Jake Luhrs, he reps ABR perfectly while the mic is in his hand and he is nothing but conviction. Crossfaith are the band to see and for the WARPED tour is the band not to miss this year. They perfectly meld dubstep and metal with hardcore into a menacing stew that cannot be fathomed without hearing and they owned it this year. Zion is what they are out in support of and if you do not own this you are missing out. Memphis May Fire are road warriors and they are still out giving love to their last album, Challenger, which is still a massive bullet in their chamber. Wherever they go they bring another level of intensity and their turn on the main stage was no exception this year. They raged and their fans became lunatics in the pit, another sickening day for MMF. I See Stars brought another level to the party and Digital Renegade is still the monster record they are delivering to the fans. Their electronics/metal connection is insane and deserves recognition. They keep getting bigger and the WARPED tour will put them over the top. New Years Day was the surprise for me this year as I was not expecting something with this level of gothic creepy on the WARPED stages. They bring the “we are rock stars” energy to the stage with their look and attitude and they have the songs to back it up. Victim To Villain is their long awaited full length and debut for Century Media and the goth fiends will devour it. The Black Dahlia Murder are what they are, brutal, dangerous and heavy as hell. They just dropped their 6th album, Everblack, and it is another nasty notch in their grind. Trevor is the unrelenting frontman and he pushes his agenda on the unsuspecting and you know you were deluged by the BDM! Lastly, Stick To Your Guns brought it all together. Heavy handed live, they bring hardcore like no other and they leave a trail of death in their wake. Diamond dropped last year and the fans are still buying it and making them the kings of Sumerian like they should be. WARPED was massively received this year and along with the bands the grounds were littered with bands booths, outlets to buy merch from labels, awareness areas for cancer and other problems we face and of course nothing but fun. If you have never experienced WARPED what the hell are you waiting for?
