Trivium/Salythia/Heat Of Damage – Ace Of Spades, Sacramento, CA 2-16
By Jeffrey Easton
Trivium has been banging it out for well over a decade now taking their incendiary brand of metal all over the world and tonight it was Sacramento’s turn to live in their world. Having just released what is possibly their best album in the form of Silence In The Snow they had a lot to give the fans tonight and they did just that. They were also bold in the fact that they are on this trek solo, just enlisting the help of local support and not depending on another name to sell tickets, just the fiery brand of Trivium.
Speaking of local support, it was a good idea to do this because it puts great local bands in front of thousands of fans throughout the tour and kicking of tonight at Ace Of Spades was Folsom, CA favorites Heat Of Damage. By the time that HOD took the stage, Ace Of Spades was packed and was eager to be laid into and Heat Of Damage did just that. They just dropped their new album Open Fire so they were armed with some new stuff to shell out on the crowd. David Haug, the singer/guitarist, had Ace feeding out of his hand from the first note they laid down and as they cruised through Watch You Burn, Little Miss Hill as well as Judgement Day the band fed off of the wildly excited audience. The rest of the band, featuring Julian Bohland (drums), Nick Lassalette (lead guitar), and Jared Easter (bass), proved why they are becoming THE band to watch in the Sacramento area.
Following that local phenomena would be hard to do but I felt that Salythia did just that. They possess an unreal blend of thrash blended with pure chaos and that translated well to the stage. Pulling material off of their psychotic piece of work, Death D’core, they had Ace of edge throughout their set as they pummeled the crowd with the likes of Bloodlust, Affliction and Chaos By Design. The band features and eclectic group of guys in the form of Michael Cozzitorto (vox), Brandon Martin on lead guitar,
Kurt Rodriguez, guitars as well as Eric Jesness beating the f out of the drums. If demented metal moves you then you have no idea what you are getting into with Salythia but you will devour it.
The time was here and it was time for Trivium to destroy the stage and that they did. As stated Silence In The Snow is their magnum opus, the release their fans were waiting for and so richly deserved. The show opened with the instrumental Snofall which led into the incendiary title track, Silence In The Snow. This set Ace on FIRE and they were zeroed into their band, singing every word as if it was their song. They kept Silence alive throughout the set with the blistering tracks Until The World Goes Cold and Dead And Gone, proving each time why this album is their best yet and why the fans are devouring it in spades. Matt Heafy’s ability to deliver the material is the true hook of the band and he keeps the fans intertwined with what the band is delivering even during the heaviest material. Speaking of, the past was brought up with some insanely dark material in the form of Into The Mouth Of Hell, Built To Fall As well as Becoming The Dragon. One of the highlights of any Trivium show is the interplay between Corey Beaulieu and Matt, six string style. These are two amazing guitar players that do not get enough credit in the metal community but I feel it is time that their names should be said in the same breath as Kirk Hammett/James Hetfield amongst others. As they plowed through their heavier than thou set they displayed their prowess with Down From The Sky and the insanely abusive set closer, In Waves. Matt asked the crowd if this was their first time seeing Trivium and throngs screamed so if it truly was then I hope they take this show with them for the rest of their lives. If YOU have yet to see Trivium, then you are seriously lacking in your concert experiences.
