The Veer Union – Decade – Pavement
By: Leslie Elder Rogers
With steadfast enthusiasm The Veer Union is putting forth a strict effort to create music they enjoy as they continue to write and record amazing songs such as what can be found on their new album “Decade”. After a lineup change and some needed adjustments, they are here and ready to show what they’re bringing to the table. Ten years after the release of their first album, the new album is set to drop January 29, 2016. This is the follow up to their re-mastered release of “Divide the Blackened Sky”. With ‘Decade” the sound we love and have become accustomed to is still apparent but better. Crispin’s voice is undeniably as powerful as ever as he continues to demonstrate his vocal talent while the band pours their heart into the meat of the music unfailingly. The CD starts out with their current single “Defying Gravity” which already has a strong presence on stations like Sirius/XM Octane. This song represents the obstacles that Crispin faces daily with his depression battles. They are continuing to show us that nothing will get in their way as they plow through lyrics about facing and overcoming many of life’s struggles in songs like “Watch You Lose”, “You Can’t Have it All”, and “I Don’t Care”. On a side note, ‘Watch You Lose” and “Make Believe” are songs that were written and produced by Crispin long before TVU existed. These songs, along with 3 other songs on the album were written prior to the onset of TVU. It was time to put these out to the fans; time for us to hear what was created so long ago, but never released. Though lacking significant drum or guitar solos, each song on the album has generous drum and guitar riffs that creatively contribute and provide the core of the music with every note played. I’m partial to “I Said” because it brings forth a slower and mellowed side of the band that pulls at your emotions with its melodic tone. You inhale and exhale slowly as Crispin drowns in heartache through the lyrics. It’s not part of their regularity and it may not fit the stereotypical TVU style. It may not even top the list of favorites for some on the new CD, but that’s what makes it intriguing and significant. In “We All Will”, accomplishment is clearly understood. After tripping, falling down, and finding yourself at the lowest possible place, “We all will rise from the floor”. We have to continue with persistence because life is worth it. The entire album, made up of ten tracks, is comprised of inspiring songs from start to finish; each one with its own greatness. There are so many significant moments of power and strength throughout. Comparing TVU to other bands is understandable. It’s common when attempting to make reference to certain sounds, but Crispin’s voice is irrefutably his own and no one else can master it like he does. The band members balance each other effortlessly. “Decade” is further proof of the commitment they have to each other and to the music they so impressively provide to their loyal fans. Make no mistake, it’s worth every dollar spent to purchase and listen.
