The Used/The New Regime - House Of Blues, Boston, MA 5/16
By Rickelle Tavares
Headed into the House Of Blues I had not one clue on what to expect, it was night two of The Used headlining show and they were playing In Love and Death in its entirety. One thing I noticed was how crammed the normally spacious venue was, from the floor to both levels of balconies it was packed. People of all ages and different styles were all waiting with anticipation for the night to start. I noticed a few very young kids as well as a ton of older people and a large amount of teens all standing around proudly wearing their The Used merch. It says a lot about The Used and how long they've been around and making an impact in the music industry. Starting off the night was a new band I personally had never heard of, they're called The New Regime but their lead vocalist Ilan Rubin has been in the industry for a while. He's worked with names such as Paramore and Nine Inch Nails, so when I found that I was extremely excited to see what they had prepared for us. They took the stage and started playing some incredible sound I can't even describe, initially it took me a few moments to just listen but once I did was really surprised. It was different and instrumental and unique, being a newer band and taking a different path in the music industry for once actually paid off. Once they started on to the second song I took a second from shooting to just look over the room and see everyone's reaction to the band, without a doubt everyone was feeling it. They had a hold on you that caught your attention and held it throughout the entire set, everything from the lighting they chose to the way the moved about on stage was mesmerizing. If they weren’t walking from one side of the huge stage to the next while playing they were just grooving to their own beats. I’ve come to notice when artist feel their own music and connect with it, it’s so much easier for you to do the same. Each song seemed to flow effortlessly into the next, the way they played and sang made an incredible impression on me, and from the looks of it almost everyone else as well. They're fairly new to the music scene as a band, but they really know how to put on a good show and I expect nothing but bigger things for them.
After The New Regime had left the stage everyone was more than excited to get to witness In Love and Death being played that night. The Used had an extremely incredible stage setup. If you’ve ever seen the album art for In Love and Death than you’d remember the distinct red hanging heart and black and white background. Well, they brought that entire work of art to life! They had a tree with the glowing and beating red heart strung up, behind it was the black and white album drawings and it was all enormous. Just before they took the stage all the lights went out, no one was yelling or anything it was so odd. Then I realized the red hear was glowing extremely bright and it started beating the faster it beat the more anticipation you grew. Moments later the entire band took the stage, it was one of the coolest entrances I’ve seen to date. The first song they played was “Take It Away” which seemed to be a fan favorite, actually to be honest every song felt and appeared that way. There wasn’t a single person that was just standing there, everyone was singing and most people were in small groups of friends singing it to each other. Normally at shows you get a mix of people just nodding or some people that just watch others that sing and some that go crazy. Fans of The Used are absolutely crazy, everyone went nuts while managing to sing I’ve never seen anything like it. Most of these people grew up listening to them and they have a connection and memories to tie into the songs, others are just huge fans that love them. Regardless of the status everyone was completely happy and front man Robert McCracken or Bert was more than excited to give them a great show. Every crowd surfer was greeted with a high five, he was encouraging everyone in the crowd to sing dance and just have fun with him. One thing I noticed which I don’t think I’ve seen before wad how the band reacted to the crowd’s reaction. Normally by mid set most bands are almost running on E, however The Used seemed to be fueled by our reaction to everything and our energy. Not one band member looked drained or tired they all had smiles on and played flawlessly, everyone went up to the stage as well it wasn’t just a focus on Bert every member was equally focused on. Slowly but surely there was a pit opening up, by the time they started the song “I’m Fake” it was a full blown circle pit. If you’re at all familiar with The Used you have to know this song, even as a kid I knew this song and all the words. The Used writes really raw and honest songs, this one really relates to everyone and it’s timeless. Everyone went wild because we knew this was the last song, hordes of crowd surfers one after another, a giant circle pit, hundreds of people screaming and singing “IM A FAKE” as loud as they could. The energy was something you could literally feel, everyone was connected and going all out for this incredible band. Watching them wave goodbye and walk off the stage was a little sad, it seemed like the show went by so fast, but time does fly when you’re having fun. Per usual Boston wasn’t ready to say goodbye just yet, almost immediately as they walked off the “One More Song!” chants started. Fairly fast they all ran out with huge smiles announcing they’d be playing “Pretty Handsome Awkward”, the uproar from the venue was massive. Everyone was still going completely insane, if you’ve seen the video for this song it’s pretty close in comparison on a level of craziness. Everyone had a good time, it was a great show and it also put me in the mood to listen to all my favorite songs from them. They announced they’d be coming back in the fall for another full U.S. tour, if you get a chance I would definitely recommend checking them out and going to a date.
