Surrounded By Monsters – Ace Of Spades, Sacramento, CA 10/12
By Jeffrey Easton
Texas has given us quite a few musical discoveries and with Surrounded By Monsters they have chalked up one of the best yet. Aggression and pure musical power make up SBM and when they hit the stage in Sacramento they displayed that brilliantly. They are out in support of their soon to be released Nuclear Blast debut Novella and they ignited the freaks in the crowd with the fierce tracks from that master stroke. They may be lumped into metalcore or whatever its being called this week but as musicians they know zero boundaries as they stretched into the material with unreal fervor. Not being satisfied with traditional song structures, they experiment with unrealistic structures and with that they gave us New Blood and You Dirty Rat, both from Novella, in the set and the reaction was blistering. The new material is a step up from Planet Horror as the band has grown as musicians and songwriters and that is evident at how insanely they performed on stage. The set was short but sweet and they closed out with another new missile from Novella, 73. This is a dangerous band and you need to know them.
