Bachman – Heavy Blues – Linus

By Jeffrey Easton

Classic rock artists rarely come bigger than Randy Bachman, co-founder of the larger than life Bachman Turner Overdrive as well as The Guess Who, and he has come back for more.  Heavy Blues is 11 tracks that is his rawest album to date and finds him at his most primal.   Not wanting to rest on his massive laurels, he set out with Kevin Shirley to make THE blues album and make it harken back to the British blues that was guitar driven and dirty as hell. One of the hallmarks of the album are the guests and the guests are massive stars in their own right and of course great friends of Randy’s.  Peter Frampton, Neil Young, Joe Bonamassa, Luke Doucet and Jeff Healey are just a few that lent licks to this ambitious albums. Each track takes on its own identity with each guest as if the axe slinger was there at its inception. The thick and fuzzy Bad Child featuring Bonamassa just reeks of fuzz where as Little Girl Lost featuring Neil Young has more of an early 70s country rock flavor while still retaining that blues edge. Not every track has a guest and with that We Need To Talk shines as a slower ballad that showcases Randy’s mellower side. Of course the stand out track is the title track, possibly one of the better tracks he has written and it features none other than Peter Frampton wailing right next to him.  Learn To Fly retains a more basic blues shuffle but cranked up it still sizzles with the rest of the album.  Does Randy still need to prove himself to anybody? No but that’s never stopped anybody and if you still have the drive and desire that Randy does then you get this massive piece of Heavy Blues.
