Parkway Drive/We Came As Romans/Counterparts – House of Blues, Boston, MA 10/16
By Rickelle Tavares
Heading into Boston there was one thing that immediately caught my attention, the line wrapping around the HOB. I could barely make it into the garage because so many people were outside grouped up waiting to get in, I was beyond excited that it was going to be a full house. After a local opener Counterparts was first to hit the stage and as it was my first time getting to see them perform and I was beyond stoked. Counterparts is from Canada and they've got a massive following and from what I was told they knew how to get down, and I was not disappointed. They opened up with a song called “Stranger” and immediately everyone was immersed in the music, without haste a pit opened up and the crowd started to sway. Into about the third song, body after body was being tossed over the barricades while each person screamed along with Brendan. Counterparts did an incredible job performing as everyone was enjoying their set. It set the tone for what was going to be a great night!
After everyone had a chance to catch their breath and let themselves cool off for a second We Came As Romans hit the stage. I've been following them since the beginning and I was wicked excited to see them again, they never disappoint. Opening up the night was the song “Ghosts” which is a very popular song from one of their older albums. The energy they exude from the stage into the crowd is nothing short of incredible, they got everyone jumping around and hyped up. Something that I can say about WCAR is the chemistry all of the members have with each other on stage and the way they interact, you can tell they love what they do. Now moving on to the second to the last song they played “To Plant a Seed”, everyone knows that song and the general consensus is that it's freaking awesome. From the first few notes to the last everyone from the balcony to the floors was singing in perfect unison and it was a great way to go out with a bang before Parkway Drive hit the stage.
Before Parkway Drive came out they played Bohemian Rhapsody as an intro. And to just to give you the kind of vibe of the crowd and venue had going, let me explain. Without hesitation, the room turned into mayhem with crowd surfers one after another barreling into the pits and there wasn't even a band on stage! Now the main act of the night were here all the way from Australia and they have quite a reputation in the metal scene. Parkway Drive took the stage by storm and without even a moment of hesitation they went right into their first song which was Crushed! Since they're a lot heavier than the previous bands, the biggest mosh pit of the night opened up and swallowed everyone around it. Next they played one of my personal favorite “Carrion” from their 2007 album Horizons, everyone went absolutely wild! For it being the second song it was incredibly hard to shoot with people being hurled over the barricades one after another, but it's to be expected from Parkway Drive. As if things weren't wild enough midway into “Dark Days” they had the coolest Co2 canons going off in perfect unison with Winston. I decided to go to the highest balcony in the venue and to my surprise it wasn't a bunch of people sitting and watching, everyone was standing up, heads banging and screaming the words! For the final song they played “Horizons” and let us know this was our last chance to go our hardest. Of course an enormous circle pit opened up and bodies were flung everywhere in sight, being on the floor with everyone just made the experience so much better. This is a band who not only performs amazing but always trumps the last performance they had and I'm always pleasantly surprised. Before they even had a chance to really get off the stage everyone had started the “ONE MORE SONG” chant, and they got what they wanted. Winston (who smiles the entire time he performs and loves the crowd’s reaction) came running out and started the song “Bottom Feeder”. Everyone including myself were wicked happy, the pit was back up immediately and the crowd surfers gave security a run for their money. All in all I would rate the show a 10/10 with everything from the line up, to the energy, to the flawless performances were perfect. If you have a chance to catch a date on this tour do not miss out!
