The Heritage North American Tour

Opeth has never been that band to sit on their laurels having massed critical and fan acclaim over the past 20 years with 10 breathtaking studio albums. The new record, Heritage, proves that point in spades with its rich textures, progressive as well as classical shades and not a single note of death. With longtime friends and sometime band mates Katatonia in tow, Opeth haunted the illustrious Fox Theater of Pomona with their phenomenal mixture of melodically haunting sounds. Katatonia, celebrating 20 years themselves opened the feast for the ears with their own mixture of debaucheries for the ears and the anticipation was delivered. They are still on the long road supporting Night Is The New Day and considering the bands affection for this monumental CD it would be unlike them to not continue to give the audience a healthy dose of it. Foresaker greeted the audience, a song anticipated and appreciated by the rabid following. Liberation, Day and Then The Shade, Onward into Battle and the darkly haunting Longest Year from Night slithered from the band as they meandered through their musical minds. It must be noted that Katatonia are immensely drawn into themselves it seems while delivering their music, a desired intensity. July and my endeared track My Twin rounded out the set and again Katatonia delivered. After that we get Opeth, where the live intensity can only go deeper. Heritage is the new record and it is deeply passionate, dark and a challenge to take in at once. That being said, the set was given the chance to explore Heritage with the deeply felt movements Devil’s Orchard, I Feel The Dark, Nepenthe/Pyre, the Ronnie James tribute track Slither as well as the encore Folklore. Now, this was a non-death metal event it was painted around tracks that Opeth could weave into the more progressive movement like the ethereal Throat Of Winter, Hex Omega, Porcelain Heart as well as Hex Omega. The crowd was moved by their genuine attempt to bring a different element to their show and it worked well to both parties advantage. Their set was uniquely adorned with Opeth logo banners that showed different elements with the lights and a beautiful backdrop of the album cover. The entire show was one huge piece of ambiance and the crowd left purely blown away.
