New Years Day – Malevolence – Another Century
By Jeffrey Easton
The album of the year has finally arrived and it is Malevolence, the massive heavy canon dropped by New Years Day. After the years of struggle, Ash Costello has assembled what will be the band to take her visions to new heights and that vision has found its fruition with Malevolence. The album is a dark look into her soul and if you honestly want to see pain, anger, freedom and get a glimpse into what makes Ash Costello what she is then you need to press play. The album opens appropriately with Kill Or Be Killed with the telling chants of “Sick, All Of Us Are Sick” and that they are. This will be the fist in the air anthem for their fan base and the rallying cry for the new legion of fans of heavy music. Kill or Be Killed also shows Nikki Misery’s talent for thick punk infused riffs that propel the track but never over do it. As you wind your way further into Ash’s you understand where she is coming from with assaults like I’m About To Break You and Relentless as well as her pain with Alone and Suffer. Suffer is possibly the deepest you will get into Ash and do not take these words for granted, you need to listen. Anthem For The Unwanted is their middle finger pointed at everybody that is not with them in their crusade or has fucked them over in the past and I feel their fans will scream this louder than they will. Save Myself From Me is pure therapy for those who have felt turmoil within themselves and with some of the angriest riffs churning beneath Ash’s pleading this will cleanse your soul. The sinister standout from Malevolence is truly Defame Me. Huge guitars, massive chorus and Ash getting in your face about getting the Fuck out of her way. Malevolence is what heavy music should be. Thick, dirty, disturbing and as they so eloquently put it, Sick. New Years Day have arrived, Malevolence will be the defining moment in their career that will take off like a nuclear missile.
