Motorhead – Bad Magic – UDR
By Jeffrey Easton
Face it, Motorhead are Motorhead and that will never change so when you pick up Bad Magic you know exactly what you are going to get. Bad Magic is Lemmy’s 22nd Motorhead album and it can be summed up in one word really, Relentless. From the opening cut Victory Or Die, which I feel is what Lemmy lives by to the crushing end, it is nonstop pure Motorhead. Only coming up for air with the retrospective ballad Till The End , which was written following his health scares, Lemmy takes the Motorheadbangers for a power chord across the head ride they will never forget. With Bad Magic Lemmy did find another gutter to prowl with the sickening Choking On Your Screams, a sickening dirge into Lemmy’s dark imagination while Phil Campbell rips possibly the best riffs and solo of his Motorcareer. Bad Magic is also full of what you want from Motorhead, anthems, and there are more than you can mosh too. Only Motorhead can fire out head cracking anthems like Shoot Out All Your Lights, Tell Me Who To Kill, Victory Or Die and Teach Them How To Bleed. Mikkey Dee is at his heaviest as well as his beats drive this album like a truck through a tnt factory. The album closes out with a cover of one of the best rock songs of all time, Sympathy For The Devil, and it is covered as only Motorhead can. It has that tribal feel at the bottom end and the ferocity ripping it up that makes Motorhead what Motorhead is. Motorhead has made it 22 albums deep with an album that can stand side by side with the likes of Ace Of Spades, Bomber or Iron Fist. If there is ever an inkling that Motorhead has thrown it in, Bad Magic will crush that notion with a single blow.
