Mayday Parade/The Maine - Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel, Providence, RI 3/16
By Rickelle Tavares
Headed into the venue I had no idea what to expect I hadn't seen Mayday Parade in years and I wasn't extremely familiar with The Maine. After the opening band finished up if was almost as if the entire room was aching with anticipation for The Maine. Once they hit the stage it was like there was a jolt of pure adrenaline that hit everyone, people that were standing around were almost trying to jump over the barricades to get closer to the stage. In order to understand this, you have to realize everyone in attendance had basically grown up listening to this band, you could see it in their faces and just the way that they talked about the band before even entering the venue that it was almost apart of them as a person. They played a song that seemed to be one of the most popular they had, I said this because every song is popular but this particular song had everyone screaming like wild animals. The song was called "Am I Pretty", combined with the song and the incredible strobe lights and stage acrobatics it was a combination of concert perfection. I myself who barely knew of the band was swaying and feeling the song just as much as every other person in the whole venue. The connection that everyone had with everyone was really amazing, random people were turning to each other and singing together and just smiling and really enjoying the concert together it was complete unity. Mid set lead man John pulled a kid on stage who he noticed didn't know the words to any songs and he taught the kid the chorus and had him lead the intro to the song. This was something I've never seen before, he wasn't making fun of the kid or trying to point out that he didn't know any of the songs. He was showing someone who really didn't know their music that they don't take themselves too seriously and it's fun to just interact with people that aren't even fans. Shortly after that they finished their set they thanked everyone for coming and had us scream for Mayday Parade to take the stage.
Mayday Parade has always been a band that I've been able to throw on after not hearing them for months and just be able to jam out to like it was my first time hearing. They've got the kind of music that you can just fall in love with every time you hear it, and sing your heart out to. Derek sanders has an incredible voice and it's backed by some of the best musicians I've ever seen perform, and that night only proved why they've been around for so long and have such a dedicated fan base. Starting off the night the entire room roared with everyone cheering them on the stage, you could see friends grabbing each other shaking their faces and just screaming it was great. I'm 100% sure everyone in the room was absolutely freaking out, and to be honest I was gripping my camera and smiling with pure excitement. Once they started the opening notes for the song "Jamie All Over" you could here every voice sing in unison perfectly, it was extremely rare not to see everyone in the band looking out at the crowd and just smiling because they loved doing what they do. By the time they reached the song "Letting Go" in the setlist you could actually see quite a few people shed a tear, it's really powerful to see something like that because it means the lyrics hit home and connect with someone on an emotional level which is what most artist strive for. It seems like Mayday Parade has the perfect song for every emotion or moment you could ever go through, but it turns into a happy ending. The end of the set was a song called "Black Cat" which was ending the night on a harmonious and positive note, it was extremely sad to watch the band say goodbye and walk off stage. Of course we all started screaming for "one more song", a few minutes later they came running back on stage to play two more songs for us. The most popular song was the one they ended the night with, anyone who hears of Mayday Parade has to know their song "Jersey" which is a huge fan favorite. Every single person from the upstairs to the floor was singing and just fully consumed by the moment. As bittersweet as it was they thanked us all for coming out and left the stage and left us all still wanting to hear more. I could've stood there for hours just entranced in the moment and the atmosphere of that show it was truly incredible.
