Dream Theater – Live At Luna Park – Eagle Vision
By Jeffrey Easton
Dream Theater is ever evolving, taking their fans on destinations unknown and ending up right where they need to be. That is the case with their new DVD release Live At Luna park. Pushing the boundaries of the live DVD, they have incorporated mind bending animation, more cameras, pinpoint accuracy and well-timed angles, capturing the essence of the pure Dream Theater show. If you have seen them live then you know there is always something to see, never a dull moment so capturing a DT event must be a painstaking event. The band was out with new drummer Mike Mangini so there was hype built into this tour, would he be up to Portnoy’s standards, would the gel that held DT together still be there? It was a resounding yes to both questions as the album A Dramatic Turn Of Events was a masterstroke as well as a massive hit. So they went on tour, selling out everywhere they went and here they were in Buenos Aires, ready to put all of that magic in front of the cameras and they were indeed ready. The fans were greeted with Bridges In The Sky and it was over, the fans ignited. The set was packed and James LaBrie was the ultimate master of ceremonies, commanding the songs and bringing the fans into their world. As the guys in DT put on the ultimate Clinic, they plowed through their massive catalog including The Root Of All Evil, On The Backs Of Angels, The Silent Man, The Spirit Carries On and of course, closing out with Pull Me Under. You could not leave out the solos and Mike Mangini was granted his to show the fans why the band picked him and he was jaw dropping good. Jordan was given his solo as well as John Petrucci and both gave the best demo that a fan of the instrument could want. These guys do not perform concerts; they give clinics, a portrait of “how exactly you should play”. Back to the camera work, this is one of the most amazing shows I have witnessed on DVD, giving every member a chance to shine and giving the fan at home the ultimate live experience. No matter what you have in your DT collection you are completely without unless you own Live At Luna Park.
