Kreator/Swallow The Sun – Ace Of Spades – Sacramento, CA 9/12
By Jeffrey Easton
Kreator are the forbearers of the German Thrash scene and they are one of the few crucial thrash acts worldwide to still carry the sword of their genre without selling their principles short. So it is no shock that they still sell massive amounts of records and pack the crowds in wherever they go. This was no different when they stepped on to the stage at Ace Of Spades during the Teutonic Thrash Tour. The special guest with them was none other than Swallow The Sun, the disturbingly good progressive doom band from Finland. They are touring for their new record Emerald Forest and the Blackbird, their best record yet, and once they darkened the stage they wasted no time in showcasing the new record. Opening the show was the title track to the new record, Emerald Forest and the Blackbird, a haunting track that slowly builds into a darkened crescendo. Also pushing from the new record were the amazing tracks Hate, Lead the Way and the first single from the record, Cathedral Walls. Cathedral Walls is possibly the best song of their career, showing off what the band is truly capable of as far as mixing the melancholy with the anger. Not forgetting their past, they performed the first installment of Horror with Swallow and Psychopath’s Lair. The fans were rabid for them as this was a true rarity to get Swallow The Sun in Sacramento.
Kreator, one of the best thrash bands of all time, came to obliterate the stage and that is just what they did. Mille Petrozza is the consummate metal frontman. He has the chops, the attitude and the perfect voice to lead Kreator into the metal storm and his fans take in every moment of it as if it were their last. Bringing them to America on this monumental tour is their new record, Phantom Antichrist. This album is just not a release, it’s an event. Since coming back with Violent Revolution, they have been on a torrid pace releasing stunning album after stunning album and it has boiled over with Phantom. With not a second to spare, they blasted the crowd with Phantom Antichrist, like giving a marching call to the masses and the brutal pit fired up. Still churning on the new record they belted out From Flood Into Fire as well as dreading Civilization Collapse. A few recent title tracks made it to the set as well with the vengeful Enemy Of God and the numbing Hordes Of Chaos. Both tracks represent massively strong records and the power that Mille still posses with his pen. They weren’t through with the new record just yet as they hung the massively brooding Death To The World over the crowd as the pit saw a violent upswing as their fans are bat shit crazy. The aforementioned Violent Revolution kicked it up a notch further as it to me is the world’s theme song now. That song it seems is coming true everyday and it will be echoed for years to come. The old shit was not neglected amongst the great new stuff they have dealt and it was punctuated with the massive Endless Pain, Tormentor, Pleasure To Kill as well as Flag Of Hate. This was a sweaty, metal fueled night and one never to be forgotten, period.
