Keith Emerson & Greg Lake – Live From Manticore Hall – Manticore

By Jeffrey Easton

Progressive Rock has a few inspiring faces but none as dominate as Emerson, Lake And Palmer. Their albums helped defined the 1970s prog sound that spawned so many bands.  So here it is 40 years later and we have Keith Emerson and Greg Lake revisiting the catalog with  an amazing live document entitled Live From Manticore Hall.  This trip into the past saves the music for future generations as they are diehard and faithful to the originals as well as offering a glimpse behind the creations of the tracks.  The core of the album keeps to the first few ELP albums as well as the immense I Talk To The Wind from Greg Lake’s stint in King Crimson. Delving deep into their catalog of prog masterworks they turn up striking renditions of Bitches Crystal and Take A Pebble as well as Pirates.  Turning to what made them legendary household names they turned out the masterful Tarkus and its multiple sweeping changes as well as the illustrious From The Beginning.  The tracks come off as stellar today as they did then and have not aged a day.  The prog element in a lot of the symphonic and power metal bands are owed so heavily to Keith Emerson and Greg Lake that these tracks should be revered as the groundbreaking elements that they are.
