Janes Addiction/thenewno2 – Mondavi Center, Davis, CA 10/12
By Jeffrey Easton
Janes Addiction are the harbingers of musical change. When they hit the scene with their S/T live album and the daunting Nothings Shocking, they started a cultural revolution within the music scene and the way people lived their lives as well. To this day, they still command a rabid audience that continues to buy their records, go to their shows and still lead the alternative lifestyle. That being said, they hit the Mondavi Center in Davis with an attitude and a full blown show that left everybody in attendance blown away by the last note. Their touring mates, the Dhani Harrison led thenewno2, hit the stage firstly with their dark electro charged alt rock and the evening was on. They led off with the first single from their new CD, thefearofmissingout, and the crowd was immediately into them. Make It Home is a stunning track that combines Dhani’s edgy vocals with daring electronics and amazing guitar lines. That same feeling carried throughout the rest of the new material they whipped out like Timezone and I Won’t Go. It’s a real maturation from You Are Here even though So Vain and Yomp are truly amazing tracks.
Janes Addiction, what can be said about them that hasn’t been said a thousand times before? They bring a raw energy to the stage, they never fail with a massive stage show and the songs they still churn out are timeless. Still touring for one of their best LPs in the form of The Great Escape Artist, the stage show reflected that age and feel and they stormed the stage to the stunning lead off track from that record, Underground. To me Underground as well as the other new tracks they played, Irresistible Force and Splash A Little Water On It, signifies where they are with their sound and how they still stay a step ahead of anybody else. Not forgetting what brought them back to begin with, they riddled the audience with the massive tracks from Strays with Just Because and Price I Pay and with the newer stuff, the audience ate it up and they should hit you in the face with the fact that no matter the time in their career, they produce quality material that the fans want to hear and not just the stuff that made them famous in the first place. That being said though, what selfish act would not give the fans the early stuff so of course four songs in, they gave the throng their sig song, Been Caught Stealing and of course they roared their approval. But going back to the studio debut, they dug up Mountain Song, Ted, Just Admit It as well as Ocean Size, Up the Beach and the always mournful Jane Says. Rounding out the massive set was one of my favs, Aint No Right as well as the show closer Summertime Rolls. I would have loved to have heard Had A Dad but the set was great so I can overlook it. Janes Addiction still brings it live to this day, a band not to be missed.
