Ice Nine Kills – Every Trick in The Book – Fearless
By Jeffrey Easton
Before the internet, tv or other modern day escapes the only solace that the disenchanted had was a book. Yes, the book was where you went to get lost in yourself and what the writer had to offer and with the release of Ice Nine Kill's Every Trick In The Book you have an idea what your forefathers had that you should reinvest yourself into. Every Trick In The Book is their take on classic literature as well as cinema that either evoked images of horror or frightened you with the subject matters plight an therefore putting you in their place. INK has done a superb job of translating what these works of art meant to them and twisted them into their own interpretations, and twisted is a nice way of putting it. The Nature Of The Beast opens the album and invokes the majestic feel of epic opera before the band kicks into a bone crushing break down as they interpret Orwell’s Animal Farm for a new generation to try and grasp. With Communion Of The Cursed, they have revisited The Exorcist and the results are spine cringing, twisting you into a pile of ash upon the last note from Spencer’s caterwauls. If Communion does not get under your skin, you are truly lifeless. As the album progresses they dig deeper and find new ways to twist already disturbed stories and reworkings of Alice, The People In The Attic ( a retelling of The Diary Of Anne Frank) as well as Hell In The Hallway (ever see Carrie?). They bring the listener into the story in an unrealistic way and with bombastic overtures to make sure they stay with you. One of the major stand outs of the album is the music. With telling stories of this magnitude you need more epic arrangements and the band was completely up to the task with their arrangements and their ability expand beyond metalcore and incorporate intricate passages into their demonic riffs. With the release of Every Trick In The Book they have layed down a pure Masterstroke and a true piece of a genius. This will be in the Metal Exiles top ten list and if this doesn’t move you then you did not hear the album I did.
