Flying Colors – Second Flight: Live At The Z7 – Mascot
By Jeffrey Easton
When people talk about super groups they usually mean a group of rock stars from famous bands that have come together to make notable record or two. Where as that is true here this is not the full story of the event known as Flying Colors. These guys have all come from notable groups but to take it a step further they are also super musicians. Neal, Steve, Mike, Dave and Casey are all stunning in what they do, whether it is Steve Morse and his guitar, Mike Portnoy on his drums, Neal Morse on keyboards, Dave LaRue on bass or Casey McPherson on vox and guitar, they all excel way past the norm of what a normal musician can do. On Second Flight, their second live album. They took on the world again with Second Nature, another album of unrealistically well written songs that took these guys to yet another level and it was time to take it to the stage once again and that’s where Second Flight comes in. The band had proven itself the first time out in bringing the first album to life but with the addition of Open Your Eyes, Mask Machine, The Fury Of My Love, Peaceful Harbor as well as A Place In Your World they made the world understand that they were a major force to reckon with. As amazing as they are separate, they are even more stunning together and their fluid playing went to another level. Prog has never felt or sounded so good as it does here and you must own this amazing piece of art.
