Sodom - Lords of Depravity II
SPV
By Jeffrey Easton
Can you think of a world in metal without Sodom? The title, Lords of Depravity, says it all. A foul minded thrash band that has survived the trends and the years that have come and gone to be the last few from the 80s that still stand to this day. This introspective DVD set goes deep into the history from 1995 to 2007 detailing how they rose from a near career death to retaking a scene that nearly cast them out. Many home movies and personal interviews with Tom Angelripper dot the landscape and they are vital to the Sodom fan. Tom is candid and honest and does not leave anything out as Sodom were next door to done but that was not to be. Aside from the deep and personal, there is a massive live show on disc 2 from Wacked 2007 and it is demented. The band was on fire.

Rush - Classic Albums: 2112 & Moving Pictures
Eagle Vision

Nobody can claim that Rush is no ordinary band and certainly not the band themselves at this stage of the game. So to go to the perspective of a band on the verge of we have to go to pre 2112. This was another band that was trying to make it, having put out a few records that did ok but still have not hit “that chord”. 2112 found that chord and it has rung out loudly for over 30 years. That concept of 2112 was so unique at the time that it put off some but astounded so many but has resonated with everybody even if in a different way. This DVD brings you into the world of 2112, the making, the backlash, record company issues, everything. Even the most astute Rush fan will learn something from this presentation. To make the cake of 2112 even better you have the icing that is Moving Pictures. Rarely has a moderate selling band lept so quickly into superstardom like Rush did with Moving Pictures. The minute details, the sounds that make up the record, they are all explained here. To me this is the pinnacle of recording a rock album, to plug in the synth sounds to mix with the drums, guitars and bass and make it work perfectly is stunning. Moving Pictures is The bible of how to make a rock record and it is still the testament, period. This DVD is a needful thing for the Consummate Rush fan and there is even almost an hour’s worth of extra footage that was not in any broadcast. Go back into the studio with Rush on the creation of two masterful rock timepieces and recreate a time when creating music in a free environment was still the norm.

Electric Light Orchestra - Live: The Early Years
Eagle Vision

ELO was the preeminent rock band to come along in one of the most innovative decades music has ever. Their stage shows evolved into a surreal experience that even blew away what KISS was doing. This DVD, Live: The Early Years, shows us ELO in their early formative years when they were gaining a foothold in the live arena and their presence was no less daunting than when they had the huge spectacle to fall back on. The first show on the menu was a very early show shot at Brunel University in what looked like their auditorium. It was a sparse stage with glaring lighting while they performed one of their early hits Ma Ma Ma Bell as well as the standard Hall Of The Mountain King (which was done so elaborately well) and King Of The Universe! Rockpalast, which is on e of the most famous of German rock shows, highlights the band here in a 1974 show where you can see how much they have evolved in a short year from the 1973 Brunel show. The set was close to the same as the Brunel show but with the addition of the rocker Showdown, Daybreaker and the oddity here with Orange Blossom Special. Anotehr show was in the offing with the Fusion show from the Face The Music tour. With this tour you could see the seeds were planted and they were showing what was coming up. This set featured future classics like Do Ya, Evil Woman, (my favorite) Strange Magic and Can’t Get It Out Of My Head as well as Poker and Nightrider. The Face The Music tour was one of the last before the bombastic live sets were put into full effect but it is the music that stands the test of time and that was on full display in each of the three concerts. Jeff Lynn and company were incredible musicians and composers and the breeding of classical movements with hard edged rock was still a dream until they came along. To get in touch with your early rock instincts and get into ELO: The Early Years.

The Rolling Stones - Ladies and Gentlemen
Eagle Vision

What do you do once you have finished recording what will become a landmark album in your career? You go out and stage a massive tour that will be remembered as a spectacle for years to come, that’s what. Exile On Main Street was a massive undertaking of a record and the tour in 1972 that followed was no less of one. With a set list that featured the likes of Street Fighting Man, Love In Vain, Dead Flowers, Bitch and Rip This Joint as well as the seminal You Can’t Always Get What You Want this was THE show to see. Mick was the consummate showman during this four night stay in Texas and Keith’s guitar just rips the place to the ground. These two were created for each other and I think on this album and tour it just clicked permanently. The visuals are purely stunning as this set of shows was immaculately captured for the world to see and since its original showing in 1974 it has remained unseen for the most part. The print for the DVD has been remastered to restore its original sheen and the results were amazing. There is nothing much that I can say about this band that has already been said But I will say that this era is tops in my long view of them and this performance is the reason why. If you are a rock buff and you have not laid witness to this set you are surely missing out.
