Dave Davies – Rippin Up Time – Red River
By Jeffrey Easton
Ok, let’s get this out of the way, I understand that Dave Davies has had a huge impact in music, including being one of the first guitar players to use distortion in a song. BUT that does not excuse this travesty of a CD. If you have an amazing history but no gas left in the tank, then stop, don’t embarrass yourself which is what he has done here with Rippin Up Time. Rippin Up Time is a ten track travesty from one of rocks most fabled guitar players of all time, proving that not everybody is Keith Richards. On this disc he chooses again to take vocal command which he does poorly. It just comes off as an old man wheezing through the lyrics as if he can’t catch his breath and the lyrics aren’t exactly admirable anyway to start with. The songs sound so strained, as if he was reaching into the very bottom of the barrel for something to write about. The riffs are sloppy at best and they are only noticeable if you can get past his shoddy vocals. Whoever green lighted this was doing it out of sheer nostalgic purposes it seems and should actually listen to what might be coming out before you allow it. Dave Davies, inventor of the distorted riff, may he rest in peace.
