Chiodos – Devil – Razor & Tie
By Jeffrey Easton
Approaching the decade mark on their career since the release of All’s Well That Ends Well it sees Chiodos as strong as ever, in fact, better than ever. It sees the return of powerhouse vocalist Craig Owens and drummer Derrick Frost and with that, Devil is the record that they have been wanting to release. Devil is their best statement to date musically, screamingly diverse as no song duplicates the last, almost musically schitzo. On one hand, you have extreme commercial possibilities with the uber catchy Sunny Days & Hand Grenades and Duct Tape as well as the sexual innuendo of 3 AM and on the other you have the demon possessed assault of Behvis Bullock. All of this happening while with Craig taking command with his force full vocals, never giving sway no matter the track. We’re Talking About Practice does open the album to full grandiose posturing and gives you an excellent taste of what is about to hit you upside the head. Ole Fishlips Is Dead Now demonstrates the schitzo perfectly as the listener is taken for a ride on a razor blade throughout the track until you hit the bridge and Craig melts into his evil side, a perfect blend that shows off how creative Chiodos can be. Why The Munsters Matter pushes the band into dramatic crescendos as Craig pushes his limits to new heights and the guitars break the glass ceilings of creativity as well. To put it into perspective, Chiodos have never created something so diverse that remains perfect from the first note to the last and leaves the listener wanting more. You in no way, shape, form or fashion will be disappointed.
