Captain Beyond – Live In Texas – Purple Pyramid

By Jeffrey Easton

Captain Beyond were way ahead of their time and they still are.  In an era of hippie influenced music and singer-song writer tunes killing the air waves Captain Beyond unleashed their S/T monstrosity and a new era of rock music was upon us.  Or so it was supposed to be.  Captain Beyond took music listeners on an ethereal ride that overloaded the senses with themes that had yet to be touched in music.  Sadly, Captain Beyond, besides a cult following of loyal listeners, never grabbed a lot of attention and after three amazing records, folded into musical history.  That being said, those cult followers still burn the Captain Beyond light brightly by trading bootlegs, videos ect exposing them to a new audience and that has warranted what I hope will not be the last of live releases.  Live in Texas, which was recorded 10/6/1973, is an amazing document to the power of a live Captain Beyond show.  Opening the record is Distant Sun from the then newly released Sufficiently Breathless then roars into the hypnotic Dancing Madly Backwards from the S/T release and the band is on fire. The dark Armworth and Myopic Void lead into the blinding Drifting In Space along with a stunning version of Thousand Days Of Yesterday. Mesmerazation Eclipse is surrounded by amazing guitar and drum solos which falls into a stunning version of Stone Free.  After listening to this you will understand why this band had the following they did.  If you were in the know and had their records, you were a special person and now is the time to rediscover them once again or find out about an insane musical master band.
