Geoff Tate – Kings & Thieves – Inside Out
By Jeffrey Easton
So the rock world was waiting, waiting to see what Geoff Tate would do, post Queensryche. Well, the wait is over, we have Kings & Thieves and the wait could have been longer. Fans have long wondered who was to blame for the demise of Queensryche’s ability to produce quality albums in the caliber of Empire but now we know. Kings & Thieves is along the lines of Tribe, Q2K, American Soldier, all of the forgettable albums that kept the fans scratching their heads wondering what happened to their band, the band that ripped out I Don’t Believe In Love amongst other Ryche gems. Kings & Thieves has an empty feeling to it, pretentious, clichéd lyrics and run of the mill rock riffs designed to carry the most mundane of rock songs. Geoff’s vocals are also tired, weak and lifeless as if he is going through the motions to collect that paycheck the album is supposed to deliver. He needed someone at the board to say “Geoff, start over, this will not cut it”, not someone saying this is gold, go with it. I wish Geoff had released a masterful record to prove the naysayers wrong, to say he wasn’t behind the decline in Queensryche but now the fingers can solely point to him as he said he wrote nearly every song Ryche has performed in recent years so he can only take the blame as well. Avoid this disc at all costs.
