Soundgarden – King Animal – Universal Republic

By Jeffrey Easton

When Soundgarden burst on the scene in the late 80’s with Ultramega OK music was in a different and when they were seemingly done with the release of Down On The Upside they had shaped the scene they left behind, forever holding the legacy of creating the Seattle Scene.  With the release of King Animal they have cemented their comeback and their certain rise back to the top of the rock heap.  King Animal is an explosive affair that the true fans will recognize as a pure stroke of genius.  The album cranks up with the absolutely true statement with the lead off track Been Away Too Long and the album just gets off.  Taking all of the influences that the band members have gathered since their untimely demise they create a diverse soundscape with King Animal, from the bombastic down tuned riffing of Blood On The Valley Floor to the surreal guitar interplay of Chris and Kim on A Thousand Days Before to the doomish feel of Rowing the band feeds of all of the energies gathered.  Chris is a better singer when he projects his emotions and he does it best on King Animal with Kim as his guitar foil for that cathartic wailing. Bones Of Birds gathers it all together, full throttle drumming, disturbing guitar playing that resonates the grunge heyday they helped create with Chris sitting on top with is impassioned vocals.  Soundgarden did the scene a disservice when they broke up but it was for the best and they have fully redeemed themselves with the comeback in King Animal, a record that will surely gather rock record of the year accolades, period.
