Re-Machined – A Tribute To Deep Purple’s Machine Head – Eagle
By Jeffrey Easton
I am on the fence about tribute albums as it seems that the bands involved are just doing it for the paycheck. Re-machined, the tribute to Deep Purple’s massively influential Machine Head has changed that thought process somewhat because the bands involved were so influenced by Deep Purple and in one case, played with Deep Purple. One of the biggest surprises here was Glenn Hughes participating in the affair. His take on Maybe I’s A Leo and Highway Star come across so convincing because he played them back when they were still fresh songs so his conviction seemed so real to me and the songs were just dripping with passion. Glenn to me is one of the best vocalists on the planet, he could sing a phone book and sound amazing. Metallica is always a favorite for any cover as they have always done them well but their take on When A Blind Man Cries was utterly flooring. James’ vocals were phenomenal and the band killed their version. Carlos Santana with Papa Roach’s Jacoby Shaddix took their turn with Smoke On The Water and turned it into a disturbingly good, emotion filled track. The odd track out would be The Flaming Lips take on Smoke On The Water. Their diverse electronic universe came down and shrouded this track in mystery and made it something unreal, might be a hard swallow for some fans but interesting all the same. Black label Society and Iron Maiden turn in smoking covers of Pictures Of Home and Space Truckin’ respectively which just adds to the intensity of the album. If Smoke On The Water did it for you then this collection of diverse artists playing homage to it will put you over the top.
