Ian Gillan/Tony Iommi – WhoCares – Armoury
By Jeffrey Easton
Tony and Ian, two of hard rock and heavy metals most storied names, have joined forces once again for a massive musical undertaking. Deep Purple and Black Sabbath along with the solo entries along the way defined where the genres would go and this CD is good blueprint as to why. The two lead tracks from the CD are Holy Water and Out Of My Mind, released under the Who Cares moniker for the Armenian Music school charity and they smoke. Ian still has amazing pipes and Tony has the massive ability to find a new riff and that has turned these two new tracks into amazing pieces of hard rock. The rest of the tracks turns this two disc set into a goldmine for rock purists. Tracks from Ian’s Sabbath Days in the form of Trashed and Zero The Hero, rare solo entries such as She Thinks It’s A Crime and Easy Come Easy Go, both seeing CD release for the first time. Also seeing a first time CD release are Slip Away and Let It Down Easy, from the well-received Fused sessions with Tony and Glenn Hughes. This was a great time for Tony And Glenn and if you do not have Fused you are sorely missing out. One of the inclusions is Anno Mundi, one the tracks from the incredible TYR record. TYR is possibly one of the most underrated records in the Sabbath catalog to this day. The songs are amazing, production is thick and this track is a great representation of the works. More stuff from Ian’s illustrious career are found with No Laughing In Heaven under Garth Rockett and Can I Get A Witness with his Javelins group, both showing very diverse elements of his career. To have all of these tracks on two CDs is monumental and will be one of the most talked about sets for a long time to come.
