Imagine Dragons – Night Visions – Interscope

By Jeffrey Easton

Welcome, music masses, to the most forward thinking band of 2012.  Yeah, they have been around for awhile but they have chosen now to unleash their first full length and it is unreal.  Its maddening, no, to have a band keep to one sound, one beat, one idea?  That’s where Imagine Dragons come in, they combine hard driving indie rock with airy vibes to create the world that is all theirs.  On any other record would you hear Amsterdam or On Top Of the World alongside Radioactive or Demons?  No you would not because most acts are afraid to take chances because most “music” fans want a four on the floor beat and that’s it.  Does it have a pretty face and a sellable hit? Ok, were good to go.  Imagine Dragons are a group of gritty rockers who go down different avenues, take chances and create grooves that sear into your memory.  Take Radioactive and its mind numbing electronic, hard hitting beat.  It’s the stand out track of 2012, its heavy as hell and it still draws you in, it has all of the elements of a song that can break any barrier. The same can be said about Demons with Dan Reynolds’ pleading vocals as he belts “Its Where My Demons Hide” to the numbing beat.  This is the stuff legends are made of because you will be in your car with the radio blasting this. It's Time, the first single from their Continued Silence EP, shows up here and is THE HIT single of the year.  Its mandolin runs with the progressive feel that runs through the song makes it the most different piece of music to hit the airwaves in ages.  The band shows a different side with the rocking but yet extremely Nothing left to Say/Rocks as well as Bleeding Out as they stretch out their musicianship with the elongated Nothing Left to say.  When you can you say a rock band clocks a track at more than nine minutes these days?  I told you they take chances and here they are, taking chances.   Most kids want 2.5 minutes, they cant invest any more time than that but these guys are here for the long haul and they will take you for their ride.  Number one indie rock album of the year, period.
