Alice Cooper – Welcome 2 My Nightmare – UMe

By Jeffrey Easton

36 years ago the world was bestowed upon with a new version of Alice Cooper, one that would send the rock world into an eternal nightmare and what better way to do so than with the stunning and time tested Welcome To My Nightmare.  That album still hypnotizes to this day so it is with amazing reason that we are thrust back into Alice’s dark and twisted mind.  Alice does not try to be modern per se, he knows that a great rock record with captivating lyrics is all you need to grasp the listeners attention and that he does in spades here.  He returns with Bob Ezrin, who helmed the first Nightmare and the marriage is perfect.  He also called on the efforts of his old band mates Neal Smith, Dennis Dunaway and Michael Bruce for the captivating “When Hell Comes Home”, possibly the most sinister track on the record.  Of course a Nightmare would not be made perfect unless Steve Hunter was present and he is throughout the record as his guitar style is unmatched.   The record pokes and prods at your psyche with “I Am Made Of You’, ”Something To Remember  Me By” and “When Hell Comes Home”, the need to not fall asleep “Caffeine” and absolute mental  horror, “I’ll Bite Your face Off” , “The Nightmare Returns” and “I Am Made Of You”.  Pop singer Ke$ha also appears in a duet on the disturbing “What Baby Wants” and to close it and tie it to the first Nightmare, you have the” Underture”.  “King Of Everything” departs from the entire album with its eclectic, non-Alice Cooper, tin pan alley type sound but it works and works well.  Alice needed this record and so does his fan and I feel it is one of his best most thought out works in years.  A must have and a contender for record of the year.
