BrokenRail – S/T
By: Leslie Elder Rogers
Vocalist, Blake Clawson, along with band members, Nelson Rezek on guitar, Dick Black on bass, and Alex Hilton on drums, set out to make a mark in music in 2010 with their debut album. That led quickly to their sophomore album in 2011. They’ve been working on new material for the past few years and though they initially planned a full length LP release, several delays have brought them to this point; the point in which they see fit to release a few of their songs on as an EP. BrokenRail has embarked on an even greater journey with their upcoming, self-titled EP, which is set for release on November 2016.. Hailing from Alabama, they were recently nominated for the Alabama Music Awards “Rock Artist of the Year”. Nominations like this are, by far, strides in the right direction. Their fan base continues to grow because as Blake puts it, “Great rock comes from strong emotion. People can tell when it’s real, something you’ve actually been through yourself”. He further says, “If you want lies, you won’t find them here”. People find solace in music. When someone can relate their own real life events or situations to an artists’ interpretation of similar happenings, the reaction to the music is one of true respect and appreciation.
This three song EP packs a punch. With grit and a bit of heartfelt agony , “Walk Again” is delivered with impeccable thought. As you listen to the musicality of the instruments that back the vocals and lyrics, you get a real feel for the passion the band has for their art. They've just released the video for this song. Next, “Save Me” comes on strong as well and further validates the brilliance of their abilities. “Memory” is a bit more hard core. We are introduced to the song through the bass, the guitar, and the drum as each instrument adds their part slowly to draw you in to the melody before any lyric is sung. This song pulls us in with a more sinister tone to set it off. Blake pushes his voice seemingly to the limit as he belts it out, almost strenuously which gives the song that extra oomph. The bass seems to be the foundation for the dark gesture behind this song. In Blakes’ voice, I find some similarities to several other well-known vocalists. With that said, he definitely has power, strength, and the ability to grab the listeners attention. I can't wait to see the finished product once the full LP is complete. Though the EP offers only three songs, it's a trio of excellence. It can only be an indication of how intensely talented they are. Any upcoming release is a must for all to include in their music library.
