Eric Clapton – Behind The Sun – Audio Fidelity

By Jeffrey Easton

The Hybrid SACD Series from Audio Fidelity rolls on with another amazing release, Eric Clapton’s big moment in the 80’s, Behind The Sun. The mid 80’s was a big turning point for Eric Clapton.  In the 60’s and 70’s he was an untouchable guitar hero, churning out a massive amount of work that his fans hailed as “cant do no wrong” but the 80’s were different.  So many new sounds and genres that Eric needed to evaluate where he was going.  The result was the massively amazing Behind The Sun.  This album, until he released Journeyman, stood as his best album since Slowhand and with the sales being what they were, I was not alone in my thinking.  Sure, it had the massive radio hit Forever Man but it was album cuts Like Never Make You Cry and Just Like A Prisoner that made this album just that much more special.  His guitar work on these two tracks pushed his talents to the edge and showed the world that he was still the guitar god they thought he was.  This album was a huge showcase for his guitar playing in general and the songs were there.  She’s Waiting is a stellar album opener and gave the fan a taste of what was to come. The title track closed the album and was a solitary piece with Eric, his guitar and a synth, all combing for a starkly beautiful piece that capped the album perfectly.
