Bad Omens/Control – The Boardwalk, Orangevale, CA 8/16
By Jeffrey Easton
With your debut album you only have one chance to impress your would be fans and now it was Bad Omens turn. They were dropping their S/T album and it was one of the hottest anticipated albums of the summer and fuck does it deliver. From the menacing The Worst In Me and Exit Wounds to the atmospheric Crawl, this album will take you through every emotion and make you feel what Noah Sebastian is voicing to you. Not only are they dropping their first album, the local openers Control are readying their first release and they played their first single, One Against The other, a moving piece that will seep into your space and will not leave.
The show opened as said with local soon to be headliners Control. Singer/Guitarist Zach MacLachlan has been a mainstay of the Sacramento scene for quite some time and his newer project has been making waves on the live scene and tonight was no exception. Augmented by Adam Shilts (guitar), Alex Vareljian (bass) and Andrew Vought (drums), they angled their way through a set of tracks that sat on the fringe of alt greatness and sounded as though they have been together a decade. Opening the set with Find The Answer, they immediately had the attention of everyone there and the rest of the set sat on their soon to be fans as if it belonged there. Deep material like Fake Smile and Remember Who You Are darkened the tone which all lead up to their massive single, One Against The Other. One Against The Other will become a classic and it is already making waves at radio. If you have a chance to see them live it is a must.
Bad Omens was next and they were setting up for the unleashing of their debut S/T album. A lot has been splashed around about them leading up to it and the baiting has been unsurmountable. Sumerian has been dropping videos every few months leading up to the release and they struck pure gold with The Worst In Me, possibly one of the best tracks to drop this year from any band. Garnering more than a million views on youtube, that told me what is in store for this band. By the time they hit the stage The Boardwalk was packing out and you could already feel the aggression. Opening with the temperamental Glass Houses, they had the crowd deeply in their grasps after the first note. As stated the album is menacing, from the artwork to the lyrics, nothing is left out and some of the takes on that is the next track in the set, Malice as well as Exit Wounds. The lyrics stab harder than a butcher knife and goes a lot deeper. They kept their fans into show by belting out the heavier darker stuff like Broken Youth but also the different sounding The Fountain. The Fountain is something you would not expect from a band like Bad Omens but its ok to be a different and surreal. The standout of course was The Worst In Me which garnered the loudest screams and the band seriously jammed it down their throats. They closed out with The Hedonist, finishing the set as dark and as angry as they started it. This band is going to be big and their mark was definitely made here.
