Adelita’s Way – Stuck
By Leslie Elder Rogers
It has been a long time coming but finally we have a follow up album to the 2011 release of Home School Valedictorian. “Stuck”, the upcoming album that will be released this summer, can be preordered beginning May 20, 2014 on I-tunes. If you preorder, you’ll get two free tracks from the album as a preview. As I first ventured into the album, listening to “Something More”, I quickly had flashbacks of songs like “Bittersweet Symphony” by “The Verve” due to obvious similarities of sound and tone. I did find potential in its’ lyrics as I continued. “Dog On A Leash”, the first single that has been released, is already moving its way into popularity. I admit, the semi-Southern guitar introduction to the song worried me at first, but I the minute Rick began singing, he pulled me right in. After seeing it performed live, it reinforced the power and strength of the song. It seems, based on the lyrics to many of the new songs, such as the title track “Stuck”, “Keep Me Waiting” and “Not Thinking About Me”, that somewhere along the line, there was a kind of hurt and contempt that provoked many of the songs on this album. I found myself wondering who experienced the pain that these songs express. This is not unlike the songs that people have come to love from previous albums of course. They seem to have a similar vibe delivering the feeling of sadness with a melodic and soothing approach, without extreme darkness and no boredom factor. We all know that pain sells; being able to fall deep into someone else’s misery makes one feel not so awful about their own sorrows. Don’t fix it if it isn’t broken seems to be the theory behind this album. As a whole, the music flows rhythmically and creates a great listening experience. Aside from one song that did not appeal to my taste, I found very little fault with this album. It is impressive in its ability to lyrically show us that we can embrace the finality of destructive relationships and appreciate that life is not perfect. They’ve added a few more tunes this time, with 11 tracks, therefore giving us more to love. This album is sure to please the devoted fans that have been long awaiting something new to dive into, and for those of you who have yet to give them a chance, there is no better time than now.
