Ace Frehley – Space Invader – eOne
By Jeffrey Easton
Ace to this date has never disappointed with his recorded output but with Space Invader he has proudly rediscovered his 70’s roots and embraced them strongly. Throughout the 80’s Ace released a string of solo albums that garnered him new fans and kept his stranglehold on the public’s perception that there was more to KISS than Gene and Paul but the reunion cut the releases short but now that he has exited that we have gotten Anomaly and now the gem of the solo collection, Space Invader. What made the 1978 S/T solo album so special is that it was raw, stripped and so guitar heavy with Ace’s almost punkish vibe vox and with Space Invader he has rediscovered that. All 12 tracks have that loud, raw feel that we knew Ace was capable of amd his ability to write shines through. The themes run ramapant with Ace’s loves, Space and Women and the bases are well covered. Space Invader, the lead track, is typical Ace and what his fans really love about him, his otherworldly mind. Furthering into the cosmos are Past The Milky Way and Inside The Vortex as well as combining them with Immortal Pleasures. Toys is as filthy as I have heard Ace and What Every Girl Wants, Gimmie A Feelin’ and I Wanna Hold You delves further into Ace’s other side. All of this is fueled by Ace’s classic guitar sound and raw vox, it’s the 70’s again as far as I am concerned But with the modern feel of a well-produced album that still kept its rawness. The album closes with his own version of Steve Miller’s The Joker and the Ace staple, the instrumental. Starship in its 7:04 time frame covers many grounds with several layers of guitars and many twists and turns. This is the album that Ace fans expect and that is what Ace delivered. As said, Ace has unleashed several albums, all great in their own right but Ace has finally delivered what the fans rememebered him for from their youth. A bombastic, raw in your face record that You Will Not Forget anytime soon.
