The Winery Dogs/The Sixxis – Harlows, Sacramento, CA 10/13

By Jeffrey Easton

In the now seemingly disposable world of music real musicianship tends to get lost but not tonight because two stellar bands have stepped up to make sure you know chops still exist.  Opening the evening is the Atlanta based The Sixxis, a powerhouse progressive band that will blow your mind.  Touring for their S/T debut album, they turned Harlows on its ear with their mix of prog, fusion jazz and heavy rock and the fans ate it up.  Vladdy Iskhakov, lead singer, possesses amazing pipes and kept the crowd in his grasp.   Debuting tracks from their S/T disc created new fans and tracks like Snake In The Grass, Believe, I Wanted More and She Only cemented why they were on tour with The Winery Dogs.

So the time had come for The Winery Dogs: Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan and Richie Kotzen, to step on stage and the wait was supremely worth it.   Their debut is THE rock album of the year, a colossal masterstroke that every fan of tasteful music should own.  I have seen these musicians in arenas so it was different to see them rip up a nightclub but Harlows, in my opinion, was the perfect venue for this music.  After hitting the stage time was not wasted and the strains of Elevate pierced through the crowd and it was nothing but a frenzy.   The entire record was played out including the now favorites We Are One, I’m No Angel, Time Machine and You Saved Me all to massive noise from the fans.  Along with the songs we were treated to a clinic on how you should play.  Richie, Billy and Mike are in my opinion are superior in what they do and they put those talents on display.  Mike also put his showmanship into his drum playing and kept the crowd focused on what the band was doing, a pure talent all around.  Each member had his own solo spot and of course Billy and Mike showed off their enourmous skills but with Richie’s spot he showed off his piano skills with his solo track You Cant Save Me, a mournful ballad that morphed into a sickening guitar solo.  As they wound down the set they threw out the Elvin Bishop classic Fooled Around And Fell In Love, Winery Dogs style, with everybody in attendance singing with the band.  The show ended with he soon to be classic Desire and the band and crowd were spent.  It was an amazing show, this band is not to be missed live or on CD.
