Dirty Honey/Mammoth WVH – Ace Of Spades - Sacramento, Ca 2/22

By Jeffrey Easton

Being an up-and-coming rock band in the last several years has taken so many to task.  With declining physical sales the need to get on the road, stay there and dominate the people you play in front of is necessary.   If you have the goods then word of mouth will spread and those people will show up, take the case with Dirty Honey and Mammoth WVH, these young bands have the goods in spades.   They have been making noise on their own for awhile so this meet up was destined and the rocked the hell out of Ace Of Spades.

Dirty Honey hit the stage first and immediately lit the sold out crowd up with Gypsy from their S/T release and considering the response, DT had them in their grips.  DT can fit into any decade from the 70s to now and not be out of place, their dirty blues hard rock flashes Zep, AC/DC, AIC but almost does all of those bands one better.   Marc’s vocals entertwined with Johns massive distortion as they plowed through their originals that are so good it feels as if they have been with you for years. California Dreaming, one of the stand out singles, turned Ace of Spades on its ear as the fans got louder as well as Heartbreaker and The Wire showing the bands musical prowess.  Dirty Honey belongs in arenas, period.  For you rock fans that have bowed at the alters of Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, AC/DC, your coveted band has arrived and you need to support this amazing band.

Mammoth WVH and its namesake Wolfgang Van Halen are on that same road, gaining notoriety, building a fanbase and dropping the jaws of every person that sees you live.  Wolfgang does have that one other hurdle, getting past the shadow of his dad and that Van Halen legacy.  With the release of his debut S/T album, he is doing just that.  Wolf is stepping into his own and showcasing his skills as a musician in his own right.  The tracks from his debut album fit have a modern rock almost slinking back into an early 90s grunge feel at times.  Wolf is an accomplished musician in his own right and that shines so brightly on his debut and on the stage.  Dropping on the stage to the roar of the crowd, he and his solid band immediately started dishing out singles and album tracks Epiphany, Distance, Don’t Back Down, I Don’t Know It All as well as Mr. Ed.    I know this is only the beginning of his career but considering he has his audiences in his hands and great tracks, it will be interesting to see where his next album sees him.
