If Not For Me/The Funeral Portrait/Archers/Catch Your Breath – The Glasshouse, Pomona, Ca 02/25
By Jeffrey Easton
There are concerts that entertain, and then there are those that go beyond a mere performance, etching themselves into the memories of all who attend. The current tour featuring If Not For Me, The Funeral Portrait, Archers, and Catch Your Breath, dubbed The Broken Souls tour, was undeniably the latter. Held at The Glasshouse in Pomona, one of my fav venues for over 20 plus years, this night was a come together of talent, passion, and the sheer power of music.
The night kicked off with a powerful set from If Not For Me. As the lights dimmed and the first chords of Demons reverberated through the venue, it was clear that the audience was in for a heavy performance. The band's sound was a perfect blend of raw intensity and melodious hooks, creating a dynamic that had the crowd enthralled from the start. The lead vocalist, Patrick Glover, had a commanding stage presence and emotive delivery that added depth to the performance, making each song resonate on a personal level with the audience. The setlist was a reflection of the new record, Everything You Wanted, blasting out Blameless, No Thanks To You, the new single Say It To My Face and closing with Feel Me Now, and was met with massive approval. If Not For Me set the bar high for the night, leaving the audience buzzing with excitement.
Next up was The Funeral Portrait, a band known for their theatrical flair and emotive performances. True to form, they transformed the stage into a dramatic tableau, with each member playing their part to perfection. Lee Jennings, the lead singer and head showman, had a charismatic presence and the band's tight musicianship created an atmosphere that was both electrifying and intimate. Their set was a journey through a landscape of intense emotions and powerful narratives. Tracks like Holy Water, Voodoo Doll, Hearse For Two and You’re So Ugly When You Cry showcased their ability to blend heavy riffs with haunting melodies, creating a sound that is both unique and captivating. Closing with Suffocate City from the album of same name, that put a cap on one of the nights best sets. The audience, however, was completely absorbed, participating in a cathartic exchange of energy that is the hallmark of a truly memorable performance.
Following The Funeral Portrait, Archers took the stage and delivered a performance that was nothing short of a great. Their sound, characterized by heavy guitar work, pounding rhythms, and evocative lyrics, created a multi-layered experience that captivated the audience from the first note to the last. The band's interaction with the crowd was one of the highlights of the night. They managed to create a sense of community, inviting the audience to lose themselves in the music and share in the collective joy of the experience. Cuts like Drag Me Out and Say This Sober were standout moments, with the crowd singing along with fervor. Archers demonstrated that they are a force to be reckoned with, leaving an indelible mark on all who witnessed their set.
Closing the night was Catch Your Breath, and they did so with a performance that was nothing short of spectacular. The anticipation had been building throughout the evening, and as they took the stage, it was clear that the wait was worth it. Their set was a masterclass in how to close a show, coming on stage and owning it. The lead singer's vocal prowess was on full display while driving hard through the set and their last album Shame On Me. The band's synergy was palpable, each member contributing to a cohesive and powerful sound. Tracks like Savages, Dial Tone, Shame On Me and Mirror, all from the last record were particularly impactful, resonating deeply with the audience and causing The Glass House to get louder.
As the final notes faded and the crowd erupted in applause, it was evident that this was a night to remember. Each band brought something unique to the stage, creating a diverse and enriching musical experience. If Not For Me set the tone with their raw energy, The Funeral Portrait captivated with their theatricality, Archers impressed with their sonic depth, and Catch Your Breath provided the perfect closing chapter to an unforgettable evening. This concert was a testament to the power of live music and the profound connection that can be forged between artists and their audience. It was a night filled with incredible talent, passionate performances, and memories that will last a lifetime. For those fortunate enough to attend, it was more than just a show – it was an experience that reaffirmed the magic of music in its purest form.
