Thor – Unchained – Deadline/Cleopatra
By Jeffrey Easton
The early 80s were possibly the most fertile for heavy metal and possibly the most decadent. Bands were coming out looking ripped, wearing leather, singing songs about the most decadent shit you could think of, all in the name of metal. So amongst the Priest’s, Raven’s, Metallica’s of the world, there was Thor. Yes, Thor. In comes this buff guy, clad in leather, using the word Macho to the core and he is belting tracks of no mercy against all that oppose him. After a few albums and EP’s he finally gained a massive notoriety with the Unchained EP and the Gods took notice. With a solid back band of heavier than thou musicians, he attacked those weaker than him with bullet laden tracks like Anger, Lightning Strikes Again and the fist in the air anthem Rock The City. That was just the tip, the assaulting Lazer Eyes and When Gods Collide were just oozing with that Euro meets America metal mold and heads did bang within earshot of this album. That was the early 80s and tastes did change and Thor’s animalistic attack did not take permanent hold. After a few more releases he faded into the memory banks until a 2000’s resurgence saw him releasing again. This amazing two disc set not only shoves that EP back in your face it includes the original master of the EP plus bonus tracks culled from other LPs. It also includes a DVD of rare performances that shows what a real metal band can do on stage. If you thought what is out now is real metal, just wait till Thor pounds the real sound into your brain.
