Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow – Black Masquerade – Eagle Vision

By Jeffrey Easton

Once deciding Deep Purple was no longer for Richie, he decided to recreate his comfort zone, his own band, Rainbow.  Upon reforming he released a masterstroke in the form of Stranger In Us All and went on a conquest to reclaim his crown.  One of the profound documents from that time, the TV appearance on Germany’s Rockpalast, has finally officially surfaced on DVD in the form of Black Masquerade.  The band is one of his best with the acclaimed Doogie White on lead vocals and whereas he comes after some of the best vocalists on the planet, he does amazingly well here in his own shoes.  The set list is a wide spectrum of Rainbow classics, new material as well as rewritten version of Greensleeves that pertains to alcohol.  Stranger In Us All was a massive record and was well represented here with the likes of Ariel, Black Masquerade, Too Late For Tears as well as Wolf To The Moon and their version of Hall Of the Mountain King. While cruising the new record it would have been a sin to forget the past and it was deftly remembered with unreal versions of Since You Been Gone, Long Live Rock N Roll, Spotlight Kid as well as my fav DP song, Burn. The stage is incredible, the light show is perfect and the band is on fire.  If this is the final document of Blackmore’s hard rock life, then he went out on top.
