Kelakos – Uncorked
By Jeffrey Easton
The 1970s was possibly the best decade for music, period. The diversity was unreal and the talent pool was bottomless. That being said the expanse of bands was almost limitless, just check out any used record store and you will see what I mean. Thousands of albums dropped with only a few getting real attention and one of those that should have made it was Kelakos. Hailing from Ithaca, NY the set out to create a legendary recording full of powerful statements and that they did. Their debut original album, Gone Are The Days, dropped and their status was officially stamped. As great as it was sadly it was overlooked and into the depths of forgotten they went until now. Flash forward to 2015 and we have Uncorked: Rare Tracks From A Vintage 70’s Band. Finally given the proper release they deserve, these 15 tracks from the first single and LP have been remixed and remastered to perfection, giving the fan the true power of these guitar driven tracks. This is 70’s rock perfection, raw guitar lines from Mark Sisson interwoven with the pleading vocals and guitar of George Haberstroh. Now, where as Mark Sisson was the rhythm guitarist – an excellent one, but ALL the lead guitar and most of the lead vocals were by George Haberstroh. He was the lead personality, the star, and the band was named after his heritage (George Michael Kelakos Haberstroh). His songs made the band what it was and why the tracks were so sought after by their die hard fans. The drums were powered by The Rods own Carl Canedy and keeping time with powerhouse bassist Lincoln Bloomfield. The deep feelings of 70’s rock are especially evoked with the tracks Till The Break Of Day, Funky Day, In The Sun and the emotive There’s A Feeling. They really hit their stride and the instrumental Break Of Day Coda showed the fierce chops that George and the band had in store of their fans. Why this went over looked is beyond me but everything deserves a second chance and the one for this record is long over due.
