Glenn Hughes - The Roadmender - Northampton, UK 5/11

Well hello Mr Hughes, long time no see and what do we have here, a sparkling new image and an awesome new band? Glenn Hughes, once in the Purple and one time Trapeze artist, and now hitting the road with his solo project.
The sound at the Roadmender in deepest darkest Northampton was clear if not a little on the quiet side. Guitarist Soren Anderson wasn't high up in the mix, but it didn't really detract from the overall sound. A sound made sweeter by keyboard man Anders Olinder. Pontus Engborg maintained a thumping drum beat, with a crisp sounding snare and meaty bass drum sound. Very evident during the pulsating' Orion'.
The funk fusion of 'You got Soul' reminded me of MCM's offerings, and it did emphasize that this band are tighter than Biff Byford's spandex and more rehearsed than your local school's Nativity play. They are here to rock your proverbial stripey socks off.
Glenn's vocals were straight and to the point, highlighting his outrageously good voice; but without his usual improvs. It did not affect however 'Stormbringer' or ' Burn', which were played with much pumping of the bass and evident enthusiasm. The general participation of a wolf hungry crowd surged the music forward.
Songs like 'Medusa' flowed like the Mississippi with a strong current and deep purpose. 'Stormbringer' was my overall favourite, it was meaty, ballsy and fun. It was a classic played in a new era for a crowd who don't pigeon hole their music - it's Glenn Hughes and it's rocking. If it's good enough for them , it's certainly more than enough for this woman.
Pontus Engborg stole the show for me. He's a show man and he hasn't realized it yet, a soon to be enigma and he's up there already with the likes of Cozy Powell, Franklin Vanderbilt and Jon Macaluso.
Glenn Hughes, Top Man, with a Top Band, Top Show ... someone buy the man a (Top) Hat!
