Thin Lizzy - Billy Idol - Meatloaf - ZZ Top - Monsters V. Aliens - 9

Billy Idol - In Super Overdrive Live

Thin Lizzy - Are You Ready?

Eagle Vision/Eagle Rock

By Rob ”Bubbs” Harris

It’s hard to deny the impact that Thin Lizzy had on heavy music. As one of the most innovative bands to emerge in the young heavy metal scene, Thin Lizzy took things to a whole new level. This dvd release of an airing of the legendary German show Rockpalast is an amazing show from 1981, when they were at their absolute best. It’s funny that this was recorded the year I was born, yet the band sounded as crisp and clear as if they had just come out of a modern day studio. That’s what these guys did though, they played balls out rock and roll, and they did it flawlessly. Phil Lynott, before his untimely death, was one of the all-time greatest bassists to ever pound the strings, all while commanding the attention of all in the room with a voice that could never be imitated or equaled. Snowy White and Scott Gorham’s dual guitar attack is a meticulous onslaught that shows both men’s effortless ability to flow from pure heavy metal shredding to slow, bluesy jamming. Round it all out with Brian Downey laying down the beat and you have here a good example of why heavy music is as dynamic as it is. Thin Lizzy had a way of writing songs that not only rock your asses off, but also connect on a deeper level. I for one know that my life and my music would not have been the same without them. Sadly, I was only a wee sprout when Phil passed, so this dvd is a way for me to experience my heroes live, as that opportunity has long passed me by. The footage isn’t the greatest, but the sound is awesome and Thin Lizzy were phenomenal.

Can you imagine a world with Thin Lizzy still touring and releasing meaningful rock records?  After watching this stunning live DVD from a 1981 airing of Germany’s Rockpalast I felt it could have happened.  Phil Lynott’s  untimely passing affected us all but he left us many document’s to remember him by and this is one of them.  His band was always top notch and his songs never ceased to rip your head off by shear action.  Tracks like Are You Ready, Black Rosie, Rosalie, Jailbreak, Trouble Boys, Got to Give It Up amongst others are served up by Phil and his menacing stage presence.  Being the bassist that everybody wanted to be, he had the band that everybody envied with Scott Gorham, Snowy White with Brian Downey and Darren Wharton to round it off.  Scott and Snowy were amazing axe slingers and delivered the tunes with full bombast.  The German crowd were full on electric for the band and rightly so as they delivered the goods.  If Thin Lizzy were around today, they would still rule the arenas and the charts but since they are not, press rewind on the time machine, pop this in and relive a different period.  This is rock and roll at its purist.
