District 97 with John Wetton – One More Red Night – Primary Purpose
By Jeffrey Easton
John Wetton is a name among names, not only did he front the biggest names in prog like King Crimson and Asia, he has been a part of a myriad of high profile projects like Bryan Ferry, UK and Uriah Heep. His vocals command an audience to take heed of his presence and that is very much the case here on One More Red Night. John has released a string of high profile live albums with various projects in the past but to me none touch this master stroke. The ease of his command of the King Crimson material after all these years is strangely alluring and he was on tonight. Recording with District 97, he tackled the three amazing King Crimson albums he helped create and made the material seem fresh and brand new. Sharing the vocals with Leslie Hunt gave the material a different feel as well and Jim Tashjian stepped into Robert Fripps’ guitar parts as if he created them. The album opens with the appropriate On More Red Nightmare and the audience immediately lights into the band. The bands passion for the material shines through as they devour The Great Deceiver, Lament as well as the evoking 21st Century Schizoid Man and Starless. The band really hit their stride as they latch into The Night Watch and Fallen Angel with John’s vocals even more plaintive and persuading. King Crimson is still a fav of mine and this retelling of their material shows the strength and staying power that it possesses.
