Couture and Sheen Return to Ontario Reign
Both to play their fourth season wearing the Reign crest
ONTARIO, Calif. – The Ontario Reign, four-time Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL’s 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, have announced that veteran right wing and 2013-14 captain Derek Couture and left wing Everett Sheen have each agreed to terms with the club for the 2014-15 season.
Couture, 30, returns to the Reign for his fourth season with the club, making him one of the longest-tenured players in club history; his 164 career games played for Ontario are third in club history behind only David Walker (216) and Kyle Kraemer (209). Last season, Couture skated in 47 games with Ontario, recording 34 points (16g, 18a) and 136 penalty minutes. In four playoff games, Couture scored once and added an assist, along with 10 penalty minutes.
"If you look at the success we've had over the last few seasons, 'Couts' has been a huge part of it," Reign head coach and director of hockey operations Jason Christie said. "He leads by example and plays hard every night. He's a guy who will go to the areas of the ice that other players don't."
The Calgary, Alberta native enters his 10th season of professional hockey, having played in his 500th game as a professional last season on Jan. 10 vs. Bakersfield. In 515 career pro games, Couture has posted 273 points (122g, 151a) and 1,115 penalty minutes. Couture originally signed with the Reign as a free agent before the 2011-12 season, and assumed the captaincy at the start of the 2012-13 season.
Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound power forward completed a five-year junior career with the Saskatoon Blades and Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League from 2000-05, totaling 106 points (48g, 58a) and 578 penalty minutes in 254 games.
Sheen, 27, will also suit up for his fourth year in a Reign uniform; his 161 career games played for Ontario is right behind Couture for fourth in club history. Last season, Sheen played in a career-high 70 games, totaling 23 points (10g, 13a) and 84 penalty minutes. In four playoff games, he recorded two assists and 10 penalty minutes.
"'Sheener' showed that he really embraced his role last season," Christie said. "You could tell it was an area he excelled in and took great pride in."
The Lethbridge, Alberta was originally acquired during his rookie season from the Reading Royals in exchange for Mike Montgomery on Feb. 14, 2012. In 198 career professional games, Sheen has posted 73 points (27g, 46a) and 200 penalty minutes.
"I've been waiting to get back to Ontario all summer, it's always been fun to play in front of our fans," Sheen said. "After the way last season ended, I'm looking forward to coming back with a vengeance."
Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot, 204-pound winger played collegiate hockey for the College of the Holy Cross from 2007-11, captaining the Crusaders in his senior year. In 149 games with Holy Cross, Sheen tallied 104 points (52g, 52a) and 82 penalty minutes.
