These Are They - Stone Sour - Saw 3D - Logan

These Are They - Disposing of Betrayers

 Unruly Sounds

Death Metal is Death Metal but sometimes you have bands that break from the mold that has been set upon them and do something different.  This is the case with this unrelenting release from Chicago’s own These Are They.  They are proud of their Chicago heritage and in this case the gangland mob scene that was created throughout the early 20th Century as the theme of the record surrounds gruesome crimes committed by the underworld lawbreakers. That is also based in the title and album cover and just when you thought it was just another “death metal murder cover”.  Each song takes you on a different mind crushing journey as you relive the horrors the victims faced at the barrel of a gun.  Even the Devastation cover, Cranial Hemorrhage, fits the theme of the album.  The guitars are brutal with a purpose with each riff slicing through the avalanche of vocals growled out by Paul Kuhr.  So you have another death metal release involving grisly murders but with the slant of history involved which means more than a slasher fest that you usually get.  I recommend this whole heartedly and it will stay in my player for awhile to come.

Stone Sour - Audio Secrecy

Roadrunner

Corey Taylor has out done himself with the third Stone Sour release, Audio Secrecy.  Not only has he and his amazing band made the most cohesive release of their career, he has possibly found his ticket to AOR radio.  Corey has two sides to his music personality and with this album that has gained more notoriety.  The stand out track for me and the most glaring song that tells me that he wants a #1 AOR hit is “Hesitate”.  Not since about 1990 have I heard a song sound like this, produced like this nor polished like this.  Reminds me of Bad English or in the vein of Alias.   Now, this is not a harkening back to when heartfelt ballads ruled the airwaves, this is 2010 but he is indeed showing his heart on his sleeve.  Other tracks following this path are “Imperfect”,  the seemingly Mr. Big inspired “Dying”, “Say You’ll Haunt Me” and “Miracles”..  All can be hit singles and make this a platinum seller which I am sure will validate his existence in Stone Sour.  Now, this is not all lit bics, there is a fire brewing with heavier offerings like “Pieces”, the hard hitting “The Bitter End” as well as my other fav stand out track “Mission Statement”.   This is Stone Sour’s most diverse record to date and the one that I think will put them on the map for good and stalwarts in the industry.  If you have wanted to dive into Corey and Jim Root’s other world outside of Slipknot then this is the record you do it with.

Saw 3D - Soundtrack

Sin/Sony Music

By Jeffrey Easton

The Saw franchise has taken another darkly sinister turn by releasing their murderous franchise in 3D and with that you get the ultimate soundtrack.  To put the eerie feelings you get with the movie into perspective they have unleashed a dark wave of hard rock and metal that will burn your speakers.  Intense tracks by Saving Abel “Never”, Dead By Sunrise “Condemned”, I-Exist “Fire Fly” and Kopek “Love is Dead” to name a few set the feeling to edginess and Nitzer Ebb’s “Promises” seals it.  My Darkest Days and Adelitas Way come in with powerful assaults as well as Hinder.  There is not a bad track here and even classic metal stalwarts Krokus come in with a new soon to be rock classic in “Hoodoo Woman”.  Saliva comes in with the hard edged gem “Badass” and Dir En Grey finishes it off with the brooding “Hageshia To, Kono Mune No Naka de Karamitsuita Shakunetsu No Yami”.  Sometimes the score of the film raises the anxiety level and that is certainly the case here.  So as you sit there watching the blood fly make sure your ears are tuned into the music that is going to enthrall you.

Logan - The Great Unknown

Logan have finally made it with their fifth release in the form of The Great Unknown.  They finally honed their sound, found their groove and that resulted in the release of their triumph in the form of The Great Unknown.  These rockers from Glasgow Scotland have released the record of their career in the form of The Great Unknown, which is filled with 14 tracks that will motivate you to move and find your inner air guitar. It has been said they are another coming of Creed and it is true, they do have elements of Creed and they do a better creed right now than the real Creed is but they do have their own identity.  They have the spirit of the 90s grunge movement down to a T sound wise but with a more modern sound.  Al and Mick play well off of each other as their guitars snarl through the record and Kenny’s vocals evoke emotions that tap deep into your system.  This is the future classic that you must get into now as straight forward honest guitar based rock is a hard commodity to come by these days.
