American Carnage Tour - Slayer/Megadeth,/Testament
Slayer/Megadeth/Testament - American Carnage Tour - Long Beach Arena - Long Beach, CA 8/10

By Jeffrey Easton
Seemingly great metal Stands the test of time and this is the case with these three titans of metal. Each one of these bands have been around since the mid 80’s and the records that they have spawned are indeed metal classics. When the American carnage tour blew into the Long Beach Arena the diehard metal heads were in a militant stance ready to go crazy. Testament blew up the stage first and it was on.. Chuck Billy was and still is the consummate frontman with his unmistaken roar and stage presence. His vocal power has been the hallmark of any Testament record no matter the line up and it translates well to the stage. Still out in support of Formation Of Damnation, their intense and possibly best album to date, they lived to the knowledge of being masters of their stage. More Than Meets The Eye, The Formation Of Damnation and More Than Meets The Eye represented the new record well as well as Trial By Fire and The New Order for the stalwarts like me in attendance.
Megadeth, what can you say about them that has not already been said? Refered to in the old days as the “State Of The Art Speed Metal Band”, they have cultivated themselves into a perfectly oiled metal machine capable of creating some of the best metal that has been heard. 20 years ago Rust In Peace was unleashed on the world and it became Megadeth’s biggest triumph to that date. I saw that tour twice (Clash Of The Titans and opening for Judas Priest) and the memories still cling to this day. During the opening montage, it was déjà vu as it was the same opening from 1990 and it was back into Rust. They played the entire Rust album for the second tour this year and it is still magical. There is not a bad song on the record and to hear Dawn Patrol live was completely sinister. They also added slicing pieces of metal like Peace Sells and Symphony Of Destruction just to put the boot further up the ass. There is a just released DVD from Megadeth’s sold out spring tour with Testament entitled Rust in Piece Live, I suggest you buy it.
Slayer, the foreboding band, the house band of the apocalypse, took the stage to roar of an appreciative crowd. World painted Blood opened their bludgeoning set and the floor became a meelee. Slayer then launched into one of the best albums period, Season In The Abyss. Seasons WAS the soundtrack to the Gulf War in my opinion and that album still resonates today. The band plowed through Seasons as if it was just released, playing it with more fervor than ever and the crowd responded as if it was still 1990. They did go back further with the encore by bashing the following over the head with Angel Of Death as well as South Of Heaven. Kerry and company still bring evil to the masses, something the Slayer babies tried and failed at but Slayer is still here, a statement of how great they are and their longevity. This was an amazing tour and I was blown away at how the years have NOT affected them.
